Native Gmail App for iPhone, iPad Available Now

We had heard yesterday from MG Seigler that Google was anticipating the green light on a native Gmail app for the iPhone and iPad. Those rumors ring true today, with Google announcing the immediate availability of Gmail for iPhone and iPad. The native email client is available now at the attractive price of free.

UPDATE: Google has pulled the app due to a bug with notifications.

Gmail for iPhone, iPad

The iPad version uses panes, similar to what we have seen in the recent Facebook for iPad app. It offers Gmail features like starring, labels, priority inbox and more. The initial login is a bit odd, as the app brings to you a web view of the Gmail login. Almost as if you were going backwards and this native Gmail app wasn’t a reality. In many ways, it’s not what many had hoped for, as it appears the Gmail app is nothing more than a web view. You can download it now in the App Store. If you switch back to the default Mail app, we won’t blame you.
