German site iFun has provided what looks to be the first glimpse at the new nanoSIM standard that will roll out with the new iPhone 5. If you look at the image above, the nanoSIM is on the left, and the right is a microSIM inside a larger, standard SIM housing.
This new, even smaller SIM standard has been rumored for some time, and allows Apple to shave off just a few more millimeters wherever possible.
The nanoSIMs in the picture were sent out to Telekom, including a note saying:
Dear partners,
you will receive today a new generation of SIM cards for the latest generation of smartphones that come in the near future on the market. Sort your SIM card please first not in their cards in hand and give it not out to customers. We will inform you shortly about how to proceed.
From the looks of the leak, you will still be able to cut down a larger SIM to make it fit in the nanoSIM slot, but unlike doing so down to a microSIM, it’ll require a hell of a lot of fine motor coordination to avoid nicking the circuitry.
