Murdoch Could Play Kingmaker Over 99-Cent iTunes TV Rentals

According to the LA Times, Fox kingpin Rupert Murdoch could make or break 99-cent rentals show rentals for iTunes. Disney’s already on board, because Jobs is part of their family. NBC, CBS and Time Warner are opposed, obstinately refusing to get their content into more people’s hands. Murdoch’s company News Corp. is apparently divided, but they may have the power to make this feature happen. Apparently some of their execs are worried that the low cost rentals will cut into DVD sales and TV viewing.

However, Murdoch might be willing to come on board for a six-month trial in order to get on Apple’s good side, a move that he thinks might help save the floundering newspaper industry by getting better on board with the iPad. Murdoch has previously stated his hopes for the iPad as a device to bring in readers who otherwise wouldn’t subscribe to a paper.
