Is Yahoo! At Least Part To Blame For The iPhone 4 Data Problems?

For those of you who haven’t been following the dramas of Windows Phone 7, much like iPhone users WP7 users have been hit with phantom data drainage, which is pushing their data over their monthly limits with frightening regularity. The culprit was eventually revealed as Yahoo! Mail due to irregularities in their FETCH and IMAP setup. Yahoo! quickly blamed Microsoft, saying that it didn’t happen on any other browsers.

Well, the guy who originally uncovered that Yahoo! was the culprit says otherwise. Rafael Rivera has done some pretty hardcore diving into how their system works, and it turns out iPhone users are being hit by the problem too. Yahoo! regularly sends far more information than iOS requires of them through Mail.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say that this is the only reason for the data draw problems that hit iOS users, but I think it might be a part. Any of our readers use Yahoo! Mail and having the problem? Any of you not?

  1. In the month of November 16 – December 17 my iPhone used 5.5GB of data. Highly unusual. I have Gmail pushing as well as Yahoo! I thought I had left the “We Rule” game running while the iPhone screen was locked. That did happen while I was at work one day and I didn’t notice until later. But, maybe Yahoo! Mail was going all freaky on me. Or a combination of both.

Luckily I have unlimited data and I haven’t had any data anomalies since then.
