There’s going to be a new iPhone at some point this year — most probably in October. That means a lot of us will be upgrading, and anyone with an old unlimited data plan will doubtless try and get it grandfathered onto the new device. Now BGR is reporting that Verizon is automatically kicking some people off their grandfathered plans, which is something that’s not meant to happen.
This comes from someone who preordered a Samsung Galaxy S III, and received an email saying:
Your request to keep the unlimited data plan for the new equipment cannot be granted. Verizon no longer offers this feature. To complete your request we have the following features available (i.e. $30 for 2GB, $50 for 5Gb or $80 for 10GB) please advise which one you would like
Please reply to this email with the above information so that we may continue your request as soon as possible.
Now, the commenters on the original story are quick to note that this is BS, and that Verizon has to allow you to keep your old plan. In fact, many of them claim that a quick phonecall will sort the whole thing out — which is doubtless true. But how many people won’t fight this? How many will just take what the email says at face value, and opt out of their unlimited data plan, and won’t ever be able to regain it?
So when the new iPhone comes out — whenever that may be — make sure to fight to keep your unlimited data plan. It’s yours, and you get to keep it.

I am with Verizon, and I am getting tired o pay way to much for this service. At AT&T you get 3GB for $30 and at Verizon 2GB for $30. But also hate AT&T and will never use them, and Sprints network is just to slow. What am I to do?
I think that this will happen. I have an iPhone 4 with AT&T unlimited data (grandfathered) and I know for a fact that they are trying this on devices that offer LTE service. So if the new iPhone is gonna be LTE and you have unlimited data expect to loose it if you want the new device. The way they are gonna get away with this is probably by saying that they offered unlimited data on their 3G service not their LTE. I bought my girlfriend the Nokia Lumia 900 (the phone is LTE capable) and if I put my sim in that phone I will loose my unlimited data.
