Is iOS 4 Making Your Photos Blurry?

BGR noted that after you install iOS 4, all of your photos seem to be downsampled to tiny versions, which look horrendous. This was something I noticed too, when I tried to set a wallpaper from a saved file. However, there seems to be any fix. Syncing again seems to have fixed the images, and they’re now all the correct size. It must just have been a bug during the original restore after the new OS was put in.

Anyone else hit any roadbumps during installation (apart from it taking a dog’s age)?

  1. Yes.. many issues.. not the least of which is my backup of my phone prior to installation of the new OS causes me to lose cellular data capability. I have to do a complete restore to new settings in order for it to work.

  2. I have also completely lost cellular data. What do I do? I can only use wifi

  3. Missing my voicemails…. Smh.. Other then that it’s smoother and seems fast…

  4. Ivan Williams says:

Yep, I lost AT&T service, too! I had to restore as new, and then re-do everything. Well, it wasn’t mine, but the Mrs.

You’d think as I did mine and it worked flawlessly, that it would be the same for her! Gosh…

  5. The only issue I experienced is that the photos in my photo library were very blurry. I synced my phone again after the initial installation and the photos look normal now. Other than that everything worked flawlessly.

  6. For people having a problem with “no service” with their cellular connection – Did you have airplane mode set to on when you started your update to ios4? Seems quite a few of us who did were faced with the same problem, after updating “no service” was showing, and the iphone also showed that airplane mode was off even though it was on when we started.

However, if you simply just switch airplane mode to show on…. then turn it back off again… the problem is fixed. Try this before going through a restore etc… Must have been another bug in the update :-)

  7. You are absolutely right. I will check whether the re-sync is doin the trick. Thanks pascal

  8. Everything was flawless….no blurry photos, no lag after completed update…it was quite snappy…(using a 16gb 3gs, no JB)

  9. I had the blurry photos, resync’d all is well. I am having problems with gmail, not pushing mail though anymore and giving me errors when trying to fetch mail.

  10. My wifi keeps going up and down like the status bar but everthing seems to be loading fine.

  11. I did not experience any blurriness of photos, but that’s because my photos are nowhere to be found. After installing the update, I went into my photo album to choose a wallpaper, I chose my wallpaper, it was set successfully, no problem. I later went back into the photo album to show a photo to someone, I got a loading screen that said “Please wait. Updating album.” Once the “update” was complete, the photo album was empty. No Photos, at all. Anyone know what could have happened? I am not a happy camper right now.

  12. Had the problem with just certain photo’s… Deleted them, then re-synced and everything is fine… The actual upgrade was very fast… Couldn’t believe it compared to years passed!

  13. I also had the fuzzy photos. Found this site and read through it. Re-synced my 3GS and the picture were sharp again. Thanks.

  14. The Album art in the track listing is really blurry. When u play the song though the full screen album art is fine. Is anybody else having this problem?

  15. same problem, after i update the iOS 4 the picture became blurry and the ZOOM is not the same.

  16. Yeah I got same probrem, my cellular data didn’t work call AT&T and couldn’t do anything, so went to the apple store they check it out , the sim card was ok but in my cell did not work, so the swap me other, with 3.1.3 ios. And told me to update it again and reinstall all of it but no backup it, but my data(OH MAN!!!!!!!!!) that is socks!!!!!!

  18. The Essence says:

I had the blurry photos as well, currently re-syncing and keeping my fingers crossed. The good news is from this site I found out I was not the only one.

  19. The Essence says:

Re-syncing worked. Thanks to everyone for the thoughts and ideas, it was extremely helpful. Life is good now.

    Krypto,
I also have the same problem, the little album art above the tracklist is totally blurry. I dont know how to fix it, but i noticed that if you sync again all your albums, it fixes. The problem for me is that i don’t have my songs in itunes…
If u know any other way to fix it please tell me

  21. iPod touch 3rd gen, I have blurry photos. But, everything else works great. It does seek like it’s not the lighted themselves. I can open them no problem with other apps, just not with the photo app.

  22. Bob's iPod says:

Re-syncing iPod or iPhone with iTunes ‘optimizes’ photo’s and restores them to their original sharpness. To address the blurry album artwork thumbnails, use iTunes to remove the music files then re-sync to fix the problem. Shouldn’t be necessary, you would think, but true.

  23. Skaterchicky relief says:

awww phewww…. such relief. i upgraded from 3.1.3 to 4 coz i had way 2 many issues with the stupid firmware and was so stoked when a friend told me i can finally fix my phone now without having 2 jailbreak it. i did try 2 downgrade 2 3.1.2 firmware was all goin well till a little window popped up sayin basically ‘ sorry, but your phone is snobby, and is mentally unable to lower its standards for reasons of being so genuine ‘. which that sucked balls…. so i had 2 wait it out & just deal witit. so after upgradin 2 this week, is started freakin out! coz my photos were blurry when i went 2 show some lengerie photos 2 a close friend. i tawt oh no! im gonna start goin 2 hell and back all over again trying 2 do everythin possible 2 fix it. Noooo… but i just goggled bout it just then and here i am. Thank the heavens 2 Google and all u people out there in the big wide world for helping out people like me that sometimes just need some easy uncomplicated answers to make life easier. thankyou xoxo

  24. Installation went ok. However, when I unlock my phone, the wallpaper continues to show behind the icons for the Apps instead of the black background that showed in the previous version. Any ideas?

@ DEREK -”Installation went ok. However, when I unlock my phone, the wallpaper continues to show behind the icons for the Apps instead of the black background that showed in the previous version. Any ideas?”

This is part of the update that I liked and could only get through jailbreak. A simple fix would just be to save a black background.

I too had fuzzy photos after the update to OS 4. Synched and went through the boring process of optimizing over 1000 photos. Deleting them and it’s now re-syncing the photos. The process takes a little while (if you have a ton of photos), but they look just like they used to now!

One very annoying thing I’ve noticed is that any pictures saved from the internet, now start over as far as the file numbers go. So, when I go to move the files on the computer, they want to overwrite the matching numbered files. Guess I’m going to have to find a quick way to rename them. I think a program called Lupas Rename should do the trick.

  26. I did all the resyncing of the iphone OS 4 update, because i had the problem with blurry photos, So, what i did is sync my iphone 3gs without syncing my photos so i deleted my old photos in my album and tried to resync with a new set of photos but this time it takes a long time to sync at least 8 hours and its not even done yet at that time so i cancel the syncing, now i dont have any photos in my album besides the one’s i have in the camera roll.

    PLEASE HELP HELP HELP!!!!!!

  27. Michelle says:

Had the same problem. Synced and no improvement so then went to photos tab in iTunes and hit sync again. iTunes then went through optimization of images which took a while but restored quality. Thx for the thread.

  28. Michelle says:

Ps. My voicemail had to be setup again after the upgrade. The phone took messages but never indicated a voicemail. When I discovered this I went through vm setup again and the phone then registered the new voicemails.

  29. Input purchased a silicone came for my iphone4. And when I take a low lite picture and the flash goes off it reflects of the camera opening of the case causing back light blur / white haze in the photos. Has anyone getting the same issue with there cases.. I think the flaw is to close to the camera Thank you

  30. Sorry for the misspells Ps. I think the camera flash is to close to the camera and the cases

  31. Tom Rogers says:

Blurry photos – yes, after I installed OS4 on my Ipod Touch 32GB. Was embarassed when I went to show photos to a friend I had not seen for years. Searching for the answer throughout the internet using Google, finally found the answer here. Don’t know why Apple isn’t more up to snuff with the stuff. The solution was in the PHOTO tab in ITUNES on my computer (which I finally found). I selected SYNCH PHOTOS FROM (there is an option of the folder you want to use).
    That corrected the problem. Whew!

  32. I had blurred pictures after my update to iOS4!
I changed my pictures folder, then synced again. Worked fine for me! No blurred pictures!

  33. Since upgrading to iOS4 all my photos from iPhoto are blurred (they are not blurred in iPhoto) – and they were not previously – they look really crappy. No other problems. Will do as other users have and see what happens.

  34. ipod touch 2g user says:

When i enter photo albums on my ipod, the status bar stays black and it takes about a while to load in which time i cant go into any albums but i can see them

  35. Blurry pictures, Iphoto Originals lost - help? says:

I had just dumped 12,000 pictures off of my mac onto an external hard drive when the harddrive crashed and I lost all but about 1000 of the pictures, which i had to pay big money to retrieve. I actually have the most recent 6000 pictures still on my Itouch, but the pictures went blurry when I updated to iOS4. The thumbnails are clear and are the only copies of these family pictures that I now have left. Is there any way whatsoever that I can get the original quality back, seeing as I cannot simply sync up like these other users and get the clarity back that way? Any ideas?

  36. I have blurred photos too. I tried resyncing them, it didn’t fix them, they are still blurred :(
but the album artwork people are saying is blurry, resyncing the songs fixes that.

  37. I tried resyncing my photos again and it still doesn’t fix them. Some are still blurry or downsized. Any other way to fix the problem?

  38. Same problem. No help at all resyncing. Is Apple doing anything about the bug?! New version perhaps?

    Very very dissapointed!

  39. before upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2 i took backup.i downloaded ispw of 4.2 and upgraded by restoring the os after pressing shift&enter key.Ipone4 upgraded to 4.2 now after restore from backup my photos/apps not synced to phone.why this happen can anybody suggest remedy.
