Lines formed today as the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were made available for sale at Apple retail stores, carriers and select retailers. There have been numerous reports regarding limited supply of the iPhone 5s, specifically gold and to a lesser extent silver. Most customers who went early with the expectations of purchasing a gold iPhone 5s, left either unhappy or with a space gray iPhone 5s. Apple provided this quote to All Things D regarding today’s launch:
“Demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and we are currently sold out or have limited supply of certain iPhone 5s models in some stores.”
As for the colorful iPhone 5c, it did not see the same level of interest, which is not at all surprising. There are two factors in play. For one, it was made available for pre-order, with shipments arriving today. The demographic for the iPhone 5c is very different, with the iPhone 5s having more appeal to enthusiasts, some of which are used to the yearly ritual of camping out for a new iPhone.
Apple’s own site lists October as the earliest availability date the gold iPhone 5s. Both the silver and space gray models are listed at 7-10 days. The iPhone 5c ships in 1-3 business days.
