iPhone 5c Pre-Orders: Why we aren’t seeing sell-outs

This was the year of not one, but two iPhones, the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s. Despite there being two new models, this year was atypical, there was only one iPhone up for pre-order days before the anticipated release. The stage was set for the colorful new entry-level iPhone 5c, with pre-orders starting last night at 12:00 PST. Would blue be the hot color and sell-out before others? Maybe there will be a big push for white, so people can indulge in creating a gazillion color combinations with those new cases. Sellouts are the norm, but this isn’t a normal release. So why was I able to get a full night’s sleep, spend time having a fortified breakfast (for me that’s two cups of coffee) and still find a rainbow of available iPhones this morning? Is the iPhone 5c a failure and should we brace for the impending Apple doom that so many ‘journalists’ have predicted?

iPhone 5c

This is a new dawn, a new day for Apple. They’ve got a shiny group of new low-cost iPhones, but they were never meant for enthusiasts, the crazy kids who stay up until all hours or camp out at the Apple Store. If we’re being honest with ourselves, this is last year’s iPhone. Shhhh! Don’t tell anyone. Apple is good, but they are not that good. Why lose an ounce of sleep over a phone that’s been out for a year? Sure it’s got the new tag and it will be perceived as new, at least by the intended audience. It would be like offering the iPhone 4S for pre-order, just a week before the iPhone 5 went on sale.

There have been a number of discussions both in our forums and on social media regarding the lack of an iPhone 5s pre-order. If I had to guess, I would say that Apple has supply issues related to the new hardware which includes the new A7 chipset, Touch ID fingerprint scanner and host of other new parts. There simply were not enough devices, so that Apple could fulfill pre-orders and have sufficient stock at Apple Stores on Friday. Unless you plan on ordering at midnight on September 20th, you’ll have to make your way bright and early to an Apple Store if you want an iPhone 5s.

Many will predict the lack of sellouts as the impending failure of Apple and the new iPhone 5c. They fail to see that Apple isn’t courting enthusiasts with the iPhone 5c. Since 2007, those are the folks who pre-order or head to the Apple Store to wait in line at the crack of dawn. The lack of pre-order sellouts doesn’t forebode poor sales. If anything, its that Apple put the wrong new iPhone up for pre-sale. Supply constraints be damned. Offer what you can to those with the quickest mouse finger and generate the buzz that’s oh so familiar.

Possible typo; in the sentence: “This is a new dawn, a new day for Apple.”
Isn’t that supposed to say A new YAWN for Apple ? Har har

It’s not a failure by any means. It’s a win win situation! They can mass produce the 5c compared to the 5s and simply didn’t want the 5s over shadowing their campaign. They know the 5s will sell well.
