The Chinese site digi163 [via NowhereElse] has uploaded a number of pictures of what appears to be the rear housing of the upcoming iPad Mini. The thing looks incredibly official, and seems to be a leak of an official part.
The one part of the story that is causing some headscratching is that it doesn’t match up with an earlier leak of the flex cable for the iPad Mini, which showed the headphone slot near the mini dock connector — maybe two variants that Apple was playing with?
MIC Gadget claims to have some knowledge of how this iPad Mini shell leaked:
Apparently, there’s an iPad mini rear shell leaked out of Foxconn factory lately, thanks to a brave Foxconn worker. He/she took the iPad mini rear shell and looked for buyers, and he/she was selling it for 38,000 RMB (about $5988).
Some case manufacturers apparently paid up, and so now you can buy legions of iPad Mini cases direct from china for less than a buck a pop. Even more curiously, MIC Gadget claims the iPad Mini housing is made of Liquid Metal, which we’ve been waiting for Apple to use seriously.
