9to5Mac is reporting from a trusted source that iOS 6 will see Apple kill off Google Maps, and instead go with its own version — including an awesome new feature.Allegedly, much of the application will be pretty similar to the existing Google Maps, except generally sleeker, faster, and made entirely by Apple. The big new change is apparently a 3D mode, which 9to5Mac describes thusly:

The most important aspect of the new Maps application is a powerful new 3D mode. The 3D mode does not come enabled by default, but users simply need to click a 3D button that is conveniently and visibly stored in the app. Perhaps under the fold like the current traffic, pin, and map view buttons.

As cool as that sounds — and sound cool it does indeed — I have some nagging questions aout how useful that would be. Specifically, I’m worried about the data cost of streaming full 3D information of a neighborhood to your phone, but we’ll burn that bridge when we know more about this. And I’m sure we’ll know for sure one way or another come the WWDC in June.
