iOS 6 To Give Podcasts Their Own App?

If you go nosing around the iTunes app in iOS 6, you’ll notice that some categories are missing: iTunes U, audiobooks, and, most worryingly, podcasts. While there’s already a separate iTunes U app, what about everything else? Peter Kafka of AllThingsD has been talking to some insiders, and the scoop is that podcasts are set to get a separate app as well:

People familiar with Apple’s plans tell me that when its new iOS 6 software becomes widely available this fall, podcasts will have their own app, where users will be able to discover, download and play them on mobile devices. Users who access iTunes via laptop and desktop machines will still find them in that version of iTunes, though.

Discovering and downloading podcasts from within iTunes on iOS has never been particularly graceful, so here’s hoping the overhaul gives us something a bit more elegant and easy to use. And if this rumor pans out, you can bet that the best dang podcast ever will be there in full force!
