One of the features missing from iOS 4.0 was “Field Test mode” which showed your reception as an absolute number, rather than abstract bars, and was the source of much debate and anger during the antennae grip of death debacle. The update to iOS 4.1 has put the feature back in. To activate it, just dial
*3001#12345#*
And you’ll launch into Field Test mode, which shows your reception as a negative number. The lower the number, the worse the quality, so -120 is worse than -80.
