iFixit Will Help You Bypass Horrible New iPhone Screws

Apple’s Diabolical Plan to Screw your iPhone from iFixit on Vimeo.

As commenters in our forum have been noting for some time, the screws on the iPhone 4 have changed, where previously there were simple Phillips heads, if you’ve taken it in for repairs or purchased a new one recently, they’re now a five-lobed screw called Pentalobe. The drivers for this are incredibly hard to come by, and it appears that Apple has instituted the change simply to stop you from getting inside your phone and modding it.

Luckily, those awesome folk at iFixit have your back. They’re selling a $10 kit with a screwdriver to take out the new screws (though it might destroy them in the process) and replacement Phillips versions to put in their spot.

Because if you want to swap out the back of your iPhone 4, you should be allowed to!

I don’t think its to stop people changing the cases, it’s because people are fixing there iPhones themselves or taking it to third party repair shops to repair there iPhones.

  2. HELLS YES GIRL!!!! If I buy it! I will do with it as I please! Thanks for being real!

These screws are on the photo of the Verizon iPhone 4 on apple.com/iphone/notify-me/ ! Clear as day which is kind of surprising.

Do NOT buy that kit yet!! I spent a good portion of the day hunting down the actual screwdriver needed for these pentalobe screws, and right now it’s 6.99 plus shipping. I am trying to contact iFixit to put them in contact with the manufacturer.

Does apply have the right to replace the screws on your phone for your own protection?

If they provide a replacement phone, I would think you’d have little choice. But just to replace the screws because they want to is not an acceptable reason.

The question at hand is, who owns the phone?
