iFixit Cracks Open AppleTV

The tear down experts at iFixit have broken out their toolkits and cracked open the new AppleTV. The lovable hockey puck features an A4 processor, 8GB of flash memory based storage and 256MB of RAM. There is also an empty space for a secondary flash memory chip. The sleuths at iFixit believe the flash memory is used for caching programming while streaming to your TV. Sounds feasible.

  1. Tim Barribeau says:

There’s some very cool stuff going on here. The power supply is under 6 watts, so it’s incredibly energy efficient. Same processor as the iPad, too. The 8GB of storage is just begging to have stuff installed on it, and even that extra chip slot is intriguing.

  2. I’m sure they’ll figure out a way to install on that 8GB, but is it sufficient enough space to install apps and cache media? I guess we’ll find out. Eventually, Apple has got to support iOS apps on AppleTV. Just makes too much sense and then it really makes this an intriguing device.

  3. now i am super stoked! i was excited, but now that i know that there is storage for apps/or other tweaks…. i cant wait!!
