How to print from iPhone

Apple’s iPhone is an amazing device that has a seemingly endless array of features to help you stay organized and productive. Printing is even possible thanks to the availability of certain apps, some of which are available at the iTunes App Store and others that are third-party applications. These items can really help you to be productive in the usage of your iPhone and can really be a lifesaver when you need to print something on the go. Here’s how to print from your iPhone.

How to print from iPhone

If you have an iPhone 3GS or later and you are running the latest version of iOS, your device is equipped with AirPrint. It allows you to quickly and easily print anything from your phone, without any configuration. No printer drivers or configuring a print queue. There is one caveat, you must use an application that supports AirPrint.

There is no need to connect any wires from your iPhone to a printer because the application is completely wireless. Only AirPrint enabled printers will work and these include machines made by Brother, Epson, Canon, Lexmark and HP. Apple provides an updated list of printers that are currently supported. Keep this in mind should you go shopping for a new printer. Having the ability to print from an iPad or iPhone is certainly a good feature.

Simply open an item you wish to print from your phone, then tap the icon with the right arrow inside a box, which is sometimes called the ‘action icon’. This icon appears at different locations on the screen, depending upon the app you are utilizing. For example, as you can see from the screenshot below, we are using the included Notes application.

Select print from iPhone

It will open options, one of which includes a button with the word “Print” on it. Clicking it will bring up more options, including “Printer,” which allows you to select a specific printer and the range of what you want printed. You can also choose how many copies you want. Press “Print” and the process will begin.

Another option for printing from your iPhone, if you have the 3G, 3GS or 4, is to download an app that enables the function from iTunes. Printing for iPhone, Print n Share, Print Free are good examples of apps you can download. The process of printing is much the same as that of AirPrint, where you have to follow easy steps toward selecting what you want printed and then selecting a printer and selecting the amount of copies you want. It can print PDF files, photos and other documents. It is necessary to keep in mind that these apps will only work with certain types of printers.

iPhone print options

As you can see, printing from your iPhone or any iOS device is a relatively painless process, which is not common when dealing with printers. If you have a compatible printer, follow the easy steps outlined above. If you get in a jam, and we don’t mean printer jam, simply ask for help in the comments section below.
