Have you ever received an iMessage or email from a friend with smileys or fun icons. These are also know as Emoji or emoticons. It’s easy to enable on your iPhone or iPad, not to mention completely free and does not require a third party app. Follow this easy guide on how to enable emoji on iPhone and iPad using iOS 6.

Navigate to the Settings app. If it’s not visible on your home screen, swipe right and start typing ‘settings ‘ into search. This will bring up the ‘Settings’ app. Tap on on it to open.

Now you’ll want to select General > Keyboard.

Here you will find a plethora of options related to the touch keyboard on your iPhone. We want to add a new keyboard, so select ‘Keyboards’ > Add New Keyboard. As you can see, there are countless languages where you can add a keyboard. For our purpose, we’re just adding fun smileys and icons. Scroll down and select Emoji.

That’s it. Press the Home button to quickly exit. Now let’s try out your new found smileys. Within any app where the keyboard is used, tap on the globe icon to the left of the dictation icon. Tap on any of the emoji to insert them in text message, emails or notes. You should know that only other iPhone or iPad users will be able to partake in the fun. The emoji keyboard is not enabled by default, so they might wonder think you purchased a third party app to insert the emoji.

The Emoji keyboard is broken out across a few tabs at the bottom. The default is for smileys, but there are so many additional options. If you tap on the flower icon, you’ll see all sorts of animals, flowers, sun, moon and weather related icons. The alarm tab will bring up holiday themed emoticons.You’ll also find some common electronics icons. Yes, there is an iPhone icon. Within each of these tabs, you can swipe right to reveal new icons. The alarm tab has 11 different sections of emoji. The car tab shows different buildings and methods of transportation. Finally the last tab shows numbers, letters, arrows, street signs and more. With so many different options, you’ll find the clock icon to the right as being very useful, since it provides you with the most recently used emoji.
