We all love the iPhone 4′s Retina Display, with its intense pixel density that brings nothing but joy. But now does it compare to other smartphones on the market? DisplayMate and PC Mag teamed up to do some analysis. They pitted the iPhone 4′s Retina Display (IPS LCD) against the Droid X (TFT LCD), HTC EVO (TFT LCD) and Droid Incredible (AMOLED).
They tested brightness, contrast, color depth, and color accuracy.
So, how did the Retina Display do? It won, but not by a lot. Where it excelled was brightness and color depth, passing all the other phones in those two section. In the contrast testing, the iPhone 4 and Droid X were around equal, both better than the HTC EVO, but much, much below the Droid Incredible — AMOLEDs have amazing contrast due to their deep blacks. For color accuracy, the iPhone 4 significantly undersaturated images, leading to understated hues in pictures. The Droid X and EVO were both much more accurate, but the Incredible oversaturated things too much, giving fake and over-popped colors.
