Apple’s excellent Calendar app is a great way to organize your busy life. The app offers the basic productivity tools that will meet the needs of most people who are looking to keep track of important appointments, meetings and events. Both the iPhone and iPad benefit from iCloud, which keeps your events in sync. Changes you make become immediately accessible from any iOS device or your Mac or PC. It’s this sort of convenience that is one of the many reasons why the Calendar app can be the perfect solution to your calendaring needs. If you are finding your schedule increasingly busy and need help, we’ve got you covered. Here’s how to get started using the Calendar app.

Before we get started, just a quick background on what we hope to accomplish. When you create a calendar in iCloud, that calendar will be synced with your other iOS devices, provided you have enabled the option to sync your calendars. Don’t feel as if you need to restrict yourself to a single or two calendars. You might want a calendar just for your kids soccer games. Think of instances where you may want to isolate specific events, like those games or specific events. Logical grouping of events is perfectly ok and a good methodology to follow. Whew, with that out of the way, let’s create some calendars.

How to add calendars on iPhone and iPad

  1. When you open the Calendar app, you’ll be in day, month or year view. In iOS 7 or iOS 8, there is a tab that runs along the bottom of the screen. Select ‘Calendars’.
  2. At the top right, tap on the ‘Edit’ link. Any existing calendars will be accessible under the ‘ICLOUD’ header.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and select ‘Add Calendar’.
  4. Type an name that is specific to your calendar and that is easily recognizable, should you have an expansive list.
  5. Select a color to help distinguish your calendar from the rest. Note: When viewing your events, they will be in the color selected. For your primary or most frequently used calendar, select a color that works best for you or contrasts nicely with the default burnt magenta used by Apple for the iOS app.
