Those endeavoring cats at iPhone5Mod have released another interesting product — an entire iPhone 5 rear case replacement for just $99. This is for when the back of your iPhone gets to utterly abused and scraped up that it looks like your kitten decided it was secretly filled with catnip.
The replacement is billed as “100% original , the same thing you are seeing and touching in your iPhone 5 right now”, which hopefully also means that it has the same sapphire crystal cover for the camera on the iPhone 5.
So why wouldn’t you want to pick one of these up if your iPhone 5 is getting beat up? Well, apart from the obvious fact that it voids your warranty? Because replacing the back of the iPhone 5 is an astronomical task. This isn’t the iPhone 4S, you can’t just slide out the back panel, and put in something different. Look at the iPhone 5 teardown — it’d be a gargantuan task to disassemble and reattach all of those connections and parts. You’d have to be pretty confidant in what you’re doing to pull that off — or someone with a lot of experience under their belt.
