If you’ve contemplated buying an Apple TV in recent months, you’ll no doubt have noticed that the second generation is selling used for more than a new one. Given that it can’t handle 1080p, and is, you know, second hand, that doesn’t seem to make sense — but there’s a very good reason for that: the Apple TV 2 can be jailbroken, and the Apple TV3 can’t. And it looks like that might not be changing any time soon.
Over Twitter, Pod2G said:
ATV3 jailbreak: I have no news sadly, I’m not currently working on it nor anyone that I’m aware of. Sorry…

If this is accurate, that’s a major blow to people who were hoping to be able to jailbreak the Apple TV in the near future. Because a jailbroken version can run media software like XBMC and external applications, the ATV2 has been quite the hot commodity, but if work has stalled on a new version who knows when and if that’ll happen with the ATV3.
The last we heard from Seas0nPass — the Apple TV specific jailbreak tool — they said back in May:
“Unfortunately Seas0nPass is not yet compatible with the new ATV3. Work is still ongoing and we’lll be sure to announce any and all news as soon as it becomes available. “
Here’s hoping some enterprising hacker picks the development of this up.

I think you mean it can’t handle “1080p”. It can handle 720p just fine.
Thanks, that’s fixed!
