The popular piracy-based iOS community Hackulous has shuts its doors, taking down one of the major locations for pirating paid apps. In a note on the website, the team posted a short message saying:

Goodnight, sweet prince.

We are very sad to announce that Hackulous is shutting down. After many years, our community has become stagnant and our forums are a bit of a ghost town. It has become difficult to keep them online and well-moderated, despite the devotion of our staff. We’re incredibly thankful for the support we’ve had over the years and hope that new, greater communities blossom out of our absence.
With lots of love,
Hackulous Team

Hackulous was the source behind the jailbreak app Installous, which allowed for pirated apps to be sideloaded onto iOS devices, as well as Apptrackr, a website for tracking such apps. According to TorrentFreak, users who already have Installous on their devices are now seeing it no longer working. They posit that there may be more at work here than just a shortage of forum activity, and raise the specter of a lack of iOS 6 jailbreak.

While a replacement may spring up in the meantime, I’m sure many app developers will heave a sigh of relief. Pirating paid app is the more directly illegal of most jailbreak-related activities.
