Details at this point are scant, but it appears that Google is trying to block the import of iPhones and iPads in a move against Apple in the ongoing and eternal patent legislation war. It’s hard to make out exactly what’s happening right now, but a number of tech blogs are reporting the attempt by Google. It seems as though somewhere in Motorola Mobility’s patent library (a group now owned by Google) are some patents with regards to 3G.
Bloomberg is reporting that the International Trade Commission is going to have another look at an ITC judge’s ruling that Apple violated one of Motorola’s patents, which are thought to relate to 3G technologies. The ITC has the power to block import of devices, which Google is evidently requesting, and the commission will make a decision by August 24th.
Generally, these attempted bans don’t do an awful lot, so I’d be surprised if we really saw Google manage this total stop on imports. Far more likely, this will just keep the lawyers fighting for even longer.
