Google Maps Now Has Street View On iOS Web App

Confirming a report we covered yesterday, the web app version of Google Maps now has street view enabled. That means that when you launch maps.google.com or else the bookmark on your homescreen, you can now go back into the first person mode so desperately missing from Apple’s own Maps app.

To get into street view, once you search for a location or drop a pin on a point of interest/shop/whatever, you can click a little person icon on the bottom right of the screen. This launches street view in another window through Safari, which you can pan around with your fingers, or close through a big X in the top right of the screen.

Performance is good but not fantastic, and it’s definitely a stopgap measure until a native app is release, but if you’re desperate to get your street view on, it’ll have to suffice.

  1. How the heck do you drop a pin reliably on the web app? Sometimes I can drop a pin, other times it ignores my tap.

This is the single biggest problem with the web app at the moment.
Everything else seems to work great, if not as pretty as the old app
    was.

  2. Though I haven’t figured how to drop a pin on the web app, I merely type in the address. I guess this will have to do for now.

  3. What a gimmick. I’ve been using street view for 42 years. It’s called eyeballs. I’ve never understood the need to see a street or a picture of a building on a phone.
