Game Center Not Coming To The 3G

Apple has confirmed that if you have an iPhone 3G, even though you can run iOS 4.1, you won’t be able to get in on the Game Center loving. On their official page on the matter, they point out the service is compatible with 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen iPod Touches, and iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4. iPhone 3G users are out of luck.

Man, more and more the iPhone 3G is being treated like the redheaded stepchild of the iOS family.

That said, I’m willing to bet that there’s a technical reason behind this. Since the iPhone 3G can’t handle multitasking, it might not be able to handle the background processing required for Game Center to be able to keep up leader boards, invitations, achievements and the like.

  1. WOWZERS! Im crapping MY PANTSZ!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. the 3G can definitely handle multitasking.. I jailbroke my old one for fun, and multitasking works fine with the jailbreak hack. Same goes for the older iPod touch. There is no lag through the jailbroken multitasking. it works almost as seamlessly as the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

  3. I find this a little difficult to understand because I was able to run 4.0 on my 3G with multi-tasking. Obviously I had the 3G JB but it ran fine and did not have the issues others were having.

Big whoop, I don’t care a lick about Game Center, I don’t play games anyway. I just want my 3G back to normal, if it doesn’t work out I’m tackling the chore of downgrading my phone, I saw some how-to videos, looks suprisingly straight-forward.

  5. Aw, a lot of people have 3G’s though. Would have been nice, wait why does the 2nd generation iPod touch get to have Game Center????

Well whatever. Since the 3G will be back to normal (well as they say) I’m happy with that
