There ya go, so forget it. I'll have to clean install Vista it looks like, upgrade the SP, then upgrade 7.

With the upgrade version you can do an in-place upgrade on any version of Vista. If it is a fresh install of Vista or a service-packed version or whatever, it can do an in-place upgrade. What I think TrnSilver was asking though, is will the upgrade package allow for a fresh clean install. The answer is _YES_. Absolutely, postively yes. With the one condition that there is XP or Vista on the computer beforehand. Once it recognizes it is there, you can then have it blow the thing away and clean install Windows 7 just fine. It doesn't matter if you have patches or not. It won't care. You don't even have to have drivers properly installed to get the Upgrade Installer started (provided that you boot off the install DVD).
That should answer your question, but should you have more questions on Windows 7, you can always take it to the official Windows 7 RC Support Forum located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...egory/w7itpro/ . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. They are pretty on the ball, and usually respond quickly to posts with questions.

Thank you Data...you are answering my exact question...but I just want clarification.

If I want to REFORMAT my computer first...I would still need to install the Vista disk I got with my computer. Then once I can access my desktop, put the Windows 7 CD in and upgrade from there? I cannot just go straight from reformat to Windows 7, correct?

That was a helpful link. I found a thread on my topic. The problem? There is no answer right now. Here is the post I made in that forum:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...4-6eb3d8d88c96

On the main Windows 7 order page on Microsoft (http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft...7/category/102) it says the following:

  • Running Windows Vista?
  • If you have Windows Vista , you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. You can do a clean install (back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications) or an in-place upgrade (Windows 7 installs over Windows Vista).

Now, I am very happy it says that. However, exactly how is that possible?

What if I first want to re-format my hard drive? Does that mean I still need to install Windows Vista, then put the Windows 7 Upgrade CD in so it can recognize that I have a legit Vista version, and then let it do the "clean install" by itself, erasing the Vista data and writing over it rather than upgrading it?

Is there no legit way to put Windows 7 Upgrade CD in and install the entire OS from scratch on a reformatted hard drive?

Thanks for the help everyone!
