Default iPhone could not restore, error code 6

Need some help here..
I connected my iPhone, that was working perfectly , to my Belkin car charger (originally iPod) and the screen got all flushed with colors and lines... I could not reopen it so I connected to iTune and did restore. Time after time, the process stops after going deep in the restore finction - and right after "verifying firmare" the process aborts and a message comes "iPhone could not be restored, an unknown error occurred (6)".
Appreciate anybody support here. Thanks you, guys.

I had this exact same problem earlier today. I plugged my iPhone into an iPod wall charger I had at work to charge it and the screen started twitching and all of these lines started appearing. I unplugged the iPhone and it's been problem after problem since. I'm at the point now where I have the White Screen Of Death when I plug my iPhone into my Mac. ITunes recognizes the iPhone and when I try to restore using 1.0.2 I downloaded from Apple, I get the same error code (6).

Moshe, did you get this worked out? If so, can you post what you did? If anyone has any suggestions, please post. I've tried the soft reset by holding the home/power buttons but all they do is get me to the WSOD when the iPhone is plugged into the dock. If it is not plugged in to the computer, nothing happens. I'd appreciate any help!

Well - I worked with Apple people for a few hours on the phone, until they got convinced this was some HW problem. You may see a few more people that had very similar problems discusssing it on the iPhone forums. I got a case number from them and shipped my iPhone to heir lab in Forth Worth. It's already on the back to me in less than 24 hours turnaround! I hope it will indeed work back as it should.

Thanks for getting back to me, Moshe. I ended up doing more research on this issue last night and found a few instances of the same thing happening when plugging the iPhone into an iPod charger. Apparently, old iPod chargers are 10v and new iPod and iPhone chargers are 5v. I basically fried my iPhone battery. I was really worried to take it into Apple because I couldn't restore and I had unlocked my phone, but I called Apple Care and got a case number after explaining what happened. This sped up the process at the Apple Store and the Genius behind the Bar ended up just running some basic diagnostic tests that seemed to be what I was trying at home. Once he couldn't get the normal screen to show up, he told me I was being given a new one. I have it here with me and will never be plugging it into an iPod charger again

Funny thing, though... I overheard the guy working on my iPhone tell another guy that mine was having the same issue as the one he was working on. They ended up switching out both. I received an iPhone with firmware version 1.0.2 even though 1.1.1 is out now, in case anyone is wondering.

Mercat99, I'm in the same situation you were in. Except, I'm worried if I bring in my iPhone, they would find out that it's unlocked. What did you do before you brought in your phone? For instance, did you remove all traceable software, restore, etc.

My phone has been restored, but it remains unlocked and installer and 3rd party apps hasn't been removed.

I'd really appreciate it if someone can help me out.

Thanks!

Hey LBrown,

By the end of this whole ordeal, my iPhone's screen was completely white and nothing could be seen. I couldn't restore it or anything so I took it in unlocked and with tons of third party apps. Being that it was a white screen, they couldn't see any of this. They only ran a few little tests to see if they could get the white screen to go away but once they were unable to they just gave me a new one. If you can still see everything on your iPhone and don't have the white screen, you should definitely try to lock it and remove third party apps again. But if all you get is the same white screen, you should be okay to take it in. Just make sure you've tried doing a few things like a soft reset to see if the white screen goes away because they will try doing this when you take it in. Good luck!

That's what I'm afraid of. Most of the time, if I soft reset my phone, it boots up fine. but gets the white screen when I put it to sleep. Did you return the phone within 30 days of your purchase date? Is it even possible to re-lock it and remove all 3rd party apps? THe guys that did it for me said it wasn't. I really question their knowledge, since he said to upgrade to 1.1.1 and then return it. From what I've read, the new firmware will brick my phone ... is that right?

I'm so desperate at this point, I have till this Thursday to exchange my phone within the 30 day return policy (if indeed that's their policy).
Thanks again!

Hi. The exact same thing happened to me last night. Plugged it into the Belkin car charger and the screen went all purple. Managed to get it working after that but as the even drew on the iPhone became more and more unstable until I got to the "White Screen Of Death" point when prompted to do an (unsuccessful) software restore. The phone was unhacked.

Apple already accepted my repair and are sending me a loaner tomorrow. I don't live near an Apple Store so had to do that over the phone. The "fix" that LBrown linked to didn't work, but I think the issue he's having is a different one, i.e. not linked to the Belkin Charger.
