I just followed Hotmail's help. Log in and when you see your mail folders on the left, there should be an Options link on the right, under the Sign Out link. Click Options and under the Manage Your Account section (first one), there should be a link to "Forward mail to another e-mail account". Click that.

Click the "Forward your mail to another e-mail address" button then type the email address you want your Hotmail forwarded to (i.e. your GMail account). Click the Save button on the right and that should do it. It didn't give me any errors so I don't know why you're getting them.

thanks but I tried that and believe me you can no longer do it unless of course they are being selective which stinks if they are and I'm sure highly illegal. My account used to be set up to forward to Googlemail but literally in the last week or so that option has been removed! Curious, others are having the same problem so guess your just lucky! May cancel Hotmail as this is pants because I can't now check email to Hotmail on my iPhone - how crap is that! Thanks for your reply though!

Odd...I've had a Hotmail account for probably 10 years so I'm wondering if it's some kind of setting they only apply to newer accounts.

i've since stopped using my hotmail accounts at all, but out of curiosity a few days ago i checked to see if i was able to forward them like i used to, and it wouldn't let me. Looks like they add/remove this feature on a whim. Go figure...
