I tried to make my own ringtone using the iTunes trick of changing the length of the song to 30 seconds and the file extension to .m4r and iTunes does not let it play. The icon still says "RING" in the icon.

Use GarageBand that is on you mac. It is very easy to make a ringtone and when you have created one, it shoots it right to itunes for you. All you have to do is sync.

How do I select it as a ringtone? This is a different way than what I normally do.

one of the drop down menus in garageband has an "export as ringtone to iTunes" feature, or something like that. If you select that it should drop it right into your ringtones directory in iTunes. Then just sync.

I seem to having a small issue. I can get the ringtone all the way into the ringtone folder and it shows up and plays properly, but it doesn't seem to add on to my iPhone. Any ideas?

Try use the FREE iRinger! It convert your tones and put them right in iTunes...ready for iPhone sync.
