It is a wireless internet network. It is faster than Edge, but you have to either have it in your home or be in an area that has WiFi.

So like. when i pay for the monthly internet connection for my iphone, is that because of wi-fi?

no, what you are paying for is the ability to use EDGE (AT&T's proprietary national network) to use for data.

Wifi is for connecting to a wireless network (WLAN) to use a different internet connection. Some establishments have free WIFI access... Starbucks, St Louis (Panera) Bread Co, etc.

EDGE is slower, but is available pretty much nationwide. WIFI is usually faster, but only available in certain spots.

Wait u don't know what Wifi is? Thats pretty wierd. Its very popular. Its when you connect to something via a router or something else to recieve internet access.

not necessarily just to receive internet access... but that's what the iphone would use it for, yes.

I leave mine on all the time because there's so many wifi hot spots where I live. It doesn't seem to affect battery life very much for me.
