Default Roaming

I have an unlocked Iphone. T Mobile is my carrier. I sometimes travel international and was wondering if there is a way I can use the internet on my iphone without getting roaming charges. I know of some people that travel and don't even pay for internet on there phone and they can pick up service in other countries and don't get charged for it. I ask and they don't know how to explain it.

If you're running firmware 2.0 or higher, you can turn on Airplane Mode in Settings, and still turn on Wi-Fi so you can use Safari or any app that can use wi-fi to get data. If you leave the cell radio on, you will be roaming off of T-Mobile's network and be charged quite a bit of money for phone use - your cheapest option to use your iPhone as a phone while roaming is to buy a local pre-paid SIM card to use temporarily (which will give you a local phone number for the area where you are).
