Iphone 3g software 3.0 not connecting to bt home hub

HELP!! recently my Iphone (3g on software 3.0) will not allow me to connect to my bt home hub. it finds the hub and asks me to enter the password, which i do, it then comes up with a message "unable to join network". i know the password is correct and i have also tried the following, turning on airplane mode for 15 secs, holding down the home button and the power button to clear my iphone, and i have also returned my iphone to the factory settings, but still not able to join network!!! i am able to join my wifi at my workplace fine so i know that the wifi works. PLs help as out of a 3g area to and cant handle 2g!!!!!

Happens to me quite frequently, you just need to get closer to the wireless hub.

It shoudlnt have anything to do with distance from the router (unless, obviously, you are too far away to receive the signal.

Seriously, its been covered loads in the connectivity boards, but a thing to check before anything else. Since the Iphone 3g and 2.xx update, the iPhone doesnt like WEP encryption, check the encryption on your router and you may hve to change it to WPA2

Whenever I get an iPhone to JB and it doesn't connect to the wireless, it's either I'm not close enough or I put the wrong password.

I've exactly the same iPhone vs BT Home Hub problem as Oldy describes. I've searched the forums and trawled through a load of irrelevant stuff on the wifi board. Can't find a single thread that deals with this. Any chance of a link?

Phew - fixed it.

In case anyone else comes up against this, here's what I did. Not sure which bit fixed the problem . . . all I know is wi-fi didn't work before but does work now.

On the iPhone:

1) Settings
2) General
3) Reset
4) Reset network settings

The iPhone then rebooted, if that's the right term

Still on the iPhone:

5) Settings
6) Wi-Fi
7) Under "Choose a Network" it had detected my router's network. I think this requires "Ask to Join Networks" to be switched on. I clicked the blue arrow / '>' sign thingy to get details of the network
8) Forget this Network
9) Back to "Wi-Fi Networks" menu
10) Switch Wi-Fi off

On my desktop PC:

11) Accessed my BTHomeHub from web browser via url http://bthomehub.home/
12) Settings.
13) "See or change your wireless security code" (this and a few of the other links take you to the same page).
14) Encryption should be "Use WPA & WPA2", not "Use WEP". Check the password here: it's what you use to access the network via your iPhone.
15) Refresh <--- a button you click in the "Wireless Settings" section.

Back on the iPhone:

16) Settings
17) Switch Wi-Fi on
18) Ensure "Ask to Join Networks" is enabled
19) Wait for your network to be automatically detected
20) Select the network and enter your password.

From here, wi-fi worked fine for me. I've a feeling only step 15 was required . . .

Just got my iPhone 3Gs today and had the exact same issue.

To fix it I had to change the hub's "Network Mode" (under Basic Wireless Settings tab) from "Wireless-N Only" to anything else ( I tested "Mixed", "Wireless-B Only", and "Wireless-G Only" - all worked)


So, if you have a manual setup on the hub, I think the key settings are (these worked for me):

On the hub:

Wireless -> Basic Settings tab:
- Network Mode: Wireless-G
- SSID Broadcast can be Enabled or Disabled
if SSID is disabled you won't see it on the iPhone's available networks so you'll have to select "Other" (see below)

Wireless -> Wireless Security tab:
- Security Mode: WPA2
- AES encryption should be ok

On the iPhone:
- Settings -> Wi-Fi
- turn On
- scroll down and select "Other" from "Choose a Network..."
- type your SSID in the Name field
- select WPA2 in Security field
- type the passphrase from hub's Wireless -> Wireless Security tab
- press "Join" button

Whenever you make changes to the hub, turn off and on the Wi-Fi on the iPhone for the new settings to take effect

I'm not a frequent user of this forum - just made my first post today and probably won't be back; I just wanted to let other people know what to look for when trying to solve this problem, but for the guys suggesting that this issue "has been covered many times" which implies that you know the solution and it's an easy one, it would have been a easier to just be more helpful than wasting your time and others with wild, endless searches
