It's even more ludicrous when you consider the networks one "might run into while out and about" since you know nothing of the traffic load on the WLAN, the LAN behind it, the internet connection behind THAT, etc. Yet people are comparing "WiFI" as if all WiFi connections were the same.

I really think you missed the point, or were looking for something that wasn't there.

Or were you the guy sitting next to me at AUS who paid $7 for WiFi that was slower than I was getting via EDGE?
