Wifi wep index?

Sorry, i'm not a networking person, so this may be a dumb question.

Just curios if someone can answer this for me as i'm a windows user.
@ work network, under windows after entering the wep key i must also specify the index as well. Is this something that is windows only or is this a setting on other OS's? What about the iPhone, does it just know which index to use or is this option missing from the wi-fi settings?

Ok, after doing some research, it appears that os x only uses index 1 (i assume the iPhone version also). Does any one know how to get the wi-fi on the iPhone to connect using index 2. I see nowhere in the settings anywhere to change this, so unless i can enter something on the wep key entry field, i might be out of luck.

I am trying to connect to work wi-fi and the keys are on rotation. If there's no work-around, it appears i might only get wi-fi at work once every couple of months. Man that sucks.

The first index key should be the only one needed for connection to a wifi network

For the rotating network key are you sure your work isnt on a wpa connection. I have never heard of a rotating wep key and most business networks prefer to use a higher level of security then a simple wep encryption. Check wirh you network administrator and see if you are on wpa on which you just need a passphrase and you'll be connected.

Yeah - good luck with that. I used any key but key 1 here at home as well as the rest of my family's homes (I'm the family computer guru, so all things related to 'puters falls to me). No way I could find for making the WEP on the iPhone do anything but key 1. Ended up having to change my home site and others to key 1 just to get my iPhone to connect. Hate that. Mebbe there'll be an update, but I'm not holding my breath on it...

Our network is definately wep, i can pull up the documentation for configuring laptops and such. I agree they should step up to wpa, but until then it's not changing.

Best part is i called Apple support asking about supporting indexes other than 1, basically told me to give my iPhone to the IT department and see if they can figure something out. They would not directly answer the question as to index support. Called my IT department, they said they don't officially support mobiles on the wi-fi, nothing they can do. I know it works because when the key was on 1 i was able to get to my exchange account.

Mitch have you tried assigning a specific ip address to your phone? A lot of times when a business still has WEP as their encryption they only allow certain ip's to connect to the router. Maybe ask you IT department about that?

WEP Key 2 Problems

The issue is just the WEP key. May organizations use other then the default of 1. It doesn't appear that there is even a key choice for the iPhone. For my home network means that I have to reconfigure just to support the phone.
