I'll probably be getting the 3G version, mainly only because it is (still) the only version that comes with a GPS chip. That GPS stuff is pretty nifty on such a big screen.

I still have to decide whether it's a Verizon or AT&T iPad, though. I suppose the smartest thing to do is to get a Verizon iPad so that if the **** hits the fan and you need to get signal in an area where AT&T is nonexistent, you can pull up the data plan buying screen and get a quick month of data and make a Skype call.

That is, of course, assuming the 3G iPad still offers affordable data plans without contracts.

Do we dare assume the Verizon iPad plan will be something and then unlimited and the AT&T one will still be good ol' 200mb/2gb?

What about prices for the data plans?

I suppose Steve learned from the pain of announcing prices for data plans that changed within 2 months as with the original iPad. Who knows, we might be screwed over by $30 minimum for 200 megs and a 12 month contract requirement.

Are we sure they're not the same model, and just locked to one carrier or the other?

Would be cool if you could jump between AT&T and verizon on a whim.

Wow its not often I disagree with everything someone says but in this case...

You can't have multitasking on a 9 or 10" screen what you can have is backgrounding... pandora, ipod , music, there is no point in running 2 apps when you can't see them on the screen. That's why they put them in stasis, and that's all RAM. I am not making this up, its just a fact. Unless they completely redesign ios its never going to "Multitask"(more then one thing on the screen at a time)

Apple quoted the very high performance of this chip, knowing that there will be nothing for a very long time that can tax it. So sure battery life will not suffer for a while. But lets wait a month till I can play Infinity Blade on it, and I'll let you know. It's only going to use 1 core as will all the current apps will. Then we will see. Apple has great battery life...not arguing that, but gaming drains the heck out of any battery, this is also a fact. If you use dual cores, it will be worse. I have used dual cores, quad cores and hex cores since they came out(PC gamer, DC projects) , they use a lot of power, its just a fact. You cant play games on the iphone and ipad and deny this.

Ahh the chip doesn't have onboard RAM, Correct? If its does I apologize, my understanding of the A5 archetecture is that it uses system RAM for its RAM. Hence no Ram no graphics, just like a desktop. You cant have graphics without RAM. Accept that an nvidia or AMD desktop GPU have tons of onboard RAM. Plenty of room for it.

The Qualcomm chip can't fit it. So it will use what is available in the system. 1GB=Great Graphics.

When I noted in one of my previous posts above, with 9 times the performance that indicates to me that the RAM must be 1GB not 512MB.

That's my thinking as well. Kind of irks me to pay $129 for a damn GPS radio. I don't know why they don't have it in the WiFi version.

I'll go for the 16GB Wifi only as long as it has a 1GB of RAM. Can't wait to find out, I would really like to play with Garage band. My i4 is a hot spot.

I'm not getting it, I'm more than happy with the current iPad. It works perfectly fine for me. I'll probably wait till the iPad 3 comes out next year. I'm a little under-impressed by it, I know it's retained it's gorgeous looks and battery life, just doesn't justify spending another £500-600 on another one.

However, if someone were to offer me a good price for my current one then I may consider, doubt it, though.

I don't feel like breaking apart your post as I am now on my iPhone, but:

Backgrounding = multitasking. Just because you can only see one app at a time doesn't mean you're not multitasking. At any given time, your iPhone/iPad is running multiple processes as part of the OS alone. Throw on top of that whatever the user is doing (which will be more and more in the future), and multicore CPUs will be essential in handling all of this efficiently. True, all of these processes are stored in RAM, but everytime the do something (receive an email, phone call, text, run the clock, display an alert, etc) they require CPU cycles. The more the OS is able to delegate the load across cores, the more power-efficient it will be.

I never said gaming won't drain a battery more quickly than other tasks. My point was that you can't say for certain that an A5 under a similar load will drain a battery more quickly than an A4. These hypothetical games you are referring to that will max out the A5 would completely destroy the A4, so I don't see how that's relevant.

Yes, RAM is necessary for graphics processing, but is much more dependent on the GPU than the difference between 512MB and 1GB.

I was looking at the pics on Apple's site, and can't seem to see a sim tray....
There has been rumor that Apple wants to go to an internal- non removable sim in the future, is this the first product sporting it?
We will have to wait and see in 10 days...

Well its been a spirited and enjoyable conversation, I think were both fans of Apple and the ipad. While I still disagree with you definition of multitasking, we can agree to disagree.

The last point you make though, about the RAM, the thing is with backgrounding/multitasking its confiscating all the RAM (If you run sbs settings you can have your available RAM displayed at the top of the screen). When I have more then 15 or so apps in the background my RAM drops to below a 100mb, and this then is the importance for 1GB, so that the Graphics still has enough to run an intensive App. My iphone 4 doesn't release enough of it. ios 4.3 should be an improvement for handling this, it just needs to close out more. I wish we could choose which apps stay in the background. That would take care of this problem. I close all my apps out as frequently as possible, to keep my available RAM up near 300MB, my i4 gets a lot snappier.

A fair point, and I would love to find out your prediction is correct. 1GB would be awesome.

The problem with that new hot intern though is that you have nothing to say to her... in the meantime the one your tossing over has some depth to her.... just saying.
