My daughter is headed off to college this summer and needs a laptop. I'm thinking about giving her my MacBook and replacing it with an iPad for me. Since my primary uses of the MacBook are for web surfing and email, the iPad should be able to replace it. I will get one of the WiFi only iPads, just haven't decided which one yet.

Well, if you're going to get one, I hazard to suggest, you might as well get the 3G connectivity for it, as I am sure that there will be a way to modify your iPhone SIM and swap it back and forth between the pad and phone.

So long as I can keep my iPhone jailbroken, I would plan on tethering the iPad to my iPhone via MyWi to get 3G access. I just can't justify spending the extra $'s for the 3G access on the iPad.

Well my suggestion would be that the actual SIM from your iPhone (which has "unlimited" data- yeah, right) can be converted to the micro SIM, and would then need an adapter so you could put it back in your phone. I think that as soon as the iPad hits the streets, someone is going to have this adapter available for purchase.

I will be watching this one closely. I too had planned on getting the WIFI only model and using the phone to tether. But if indeed something comes along where you can swap the card, I think the extra $$ will be worth it because tethering is a battery hog and you really need to have the phone plugged in if you are going to be using it for any amount of time. It would be a lot less hassle if you could just swap sims.

Well I can tell you right now that the "micro" sim is nothing more than a standard sim without the extra plastic on the one end. the contact points are exactly the same as a regular sim.
What was pointed out ( and I cannot tell you where I read this- there have been so many sites I have been to in the past couple weeks) and was illistrated with pictures, was that you can trim the existing sim to match the micro sim. If done carefully with an exacto knife, you can cut your existing sim to the micro size, use in the iPad, and then with a piece of tape, stick it back into the left over SIM that you cut out from, and place back into your phone.

I have read the same thing Hawk, but I also read somewhere (like you I have been to a ton of sites on this thing) that the problem could lie in getting the contacts to line up just right when reinserted in the phone. I don't know if this is the case or not. Seems to me it wouldn't be that big a problem.
I really think someone is going to come up with some sort of adapter. Let's just hope Apple doesn't make the sim non removable like the battery. lol

I will patiently (yeah right) wait for the 32GB Wifi/3G model.
Plus, I want to hear what everybody has to say who bought the early wifi models. That alone should help people decide if they want to wait for the 3G version.

Wifi only unless I have a major lifestyle change.

I know you are new to the forums so I am not really busting your chops, but you have to admit that is kind of a funny statement. LOL

No worries, it's just that I don't travel often enough that a 3g connection would be worth bothering with.

The places I might want to use an ipad, away from home, all have good wireless connections and my Macbook is more likely to go with me than an ipad, unless I make some big change and that's not likely.

3G/Wifi model. Personally I can't see the sense in a wifi only model for my use. I like the idea of connectivity availability 99% of the time.

Yep, when I want online I want online now! Even if I am in a non 3G area, I can still get a half decent throughput on an analog signal. It is totally worth having it and paying the $30 for the unlimited package then to have wifi only, and wish I had spent $130 more to have the 3G access. I don't plan to buy anything that I may have that regret factor anymore. I have officially learned my lesson, many times over. (And I'm also seriously considering the 64GB model too.)
