John, you gotta remember why those cars were built, you're not supposed to drive them on the Pennsylvania turnpike, they are city cars, so they aren't any more dangerous to drive than a scooter, and I see a lot of those.

A scooter? You've lost me. They're even more dangerous than a Smart Car.

Exactly what I was trying to say, the smart was built to drive around the city and there's a lot of scooters in the city, easier to drive where the traffic isn't going 80mph everywhere.
My brother in law works in Palermo for a car insurance co. he told me that the smart is in the least of car accidents.
even small towns in Europe ( at least south Europe ) have the same traffic congestions as the big city, so it's not as bad as you think over there. Over here in the US? you'd be death in no time, that I agree with you.

Yes, really. From the link you provided (5th down, video).

    http://blog.oregonlive.com/commuting/2009/04/video_smart_car_jarringly_stup.html

They may have made them safer, however, if I was to crash in any car it certainly wouldn't be a Smart Car.

From another hit (4th down) which came from your search...

You picked out two links. What about the others that say it's a pretty safe car in a crash??

John... they are very safe cars when they are within their designed purpose. The Smart car has crumple zones and the "black box" (the frame that holds the occupants) is built to withstand impact forces and dissipate them around the car and not into the occupants bodies.

The car is a CITY car. example for zipping around in central London... where traffic tends to never exceed more than 30mph. The tiny engine isnt built for speed, it isnt build for over taking moving quickly because anyone who lives inside Zone 1 London, or even in Manhattan knows by the time you get to 30mph you are slowing down again for a stop light. The car isnt a highway car by any means.

Small, nimble, perfect for old Italian cities with small roads etc.

Compared to the obese sized SUV's in America... and on massive highways, the Smart Car is out of its element and tbh is highly impractical if you are making long journeys of 2 hours or more. That said... A Smart fourtwo VS a Cadillac Escalade, or Hummer... isnt going to fair very well... in America. But the odds of even being hit by a hummer or Escalade in a city like London... I'd say are rare.

Yes, but it still goes to show that my post wasn't made on a lack of knowledge.

I don't want to argue. The car may be safe now, but it certainly wasn't when it was first put into production. Even with advances in technology I would still prefer to be in something bigger.

    Anyway...

I'd love to own one of these one day: TVR Sagaris. That power to weight ratio is amazing... exceptionally rare seeing how that Russian Billionaire owner can take over a ailing car company... and then cant seem to make the company work. Such a waste... the car is rare.

If gas prices here in the US were $7 a gallon like they are in Italy, people would be driving fiat 126s like crazy.
