what does it mean and what does it do?
It might be this?
TTY, also known as Text Telephone Device or Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD), is a special device required at both ends of the conversation that enables people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired to use the telephone to communicate. TTY works by allowing people to type messages back and forth to one another instead of talking and listening.
Can someone please tell me what TTY is??
This should give you a pretty good idea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TTY
well whats the point of it on the iphone?
Well, I think you can use some extra equipment to set it up so that a deaf person (or any bit of hearing impairment) could use the phone as a communication device.
TTY allows hearing impaired individuals to make and receive text phone calls.
does that mean free texting?
I thought it converted voice to text for the deaf person and then converted text to voice for the non-deaf person. but I could easily be wrong on that
Stew is correct.
shall I try it? lol
don't bother, it would only work when dialing another TTY enabled telephone number. Basically what it does is work like an old dial-up modem works by sending the information over a standard telephone signal, to just send textual information. Yeah, it's essentially texting, but you can't just go and text anyone you want, because technically it still isn't texting. Overall, if you're not deaf or don't actively communicate with deaf people, and don't actually have any other need to use it, don't bother trying to use it
trying to ruin my fun?
you guys seem to know a lot about phones here
thanks for the info
Stew said it perfectly, As a sign language and def culture student I coulnd't of said it better.
When you put it on its like a Phone and dots in the right hand side
Please let me know what does that do
I think TTY is for deaf people with hearing aids...I could be wrong though...
When I use my headset, people can only hear me when I use TTY. I thought it was for text based communication like stew had posted.
so if your friend does enable it on their end, too, then you can msg each other? this option's on all cellphones, I think. correct me if I'm wrong.
nvr mind. I missed the "special device" part.
I don't have that setting on my 3g with Optus in Australia.
