Hi there. Laptop broke with synced iPod on it. iTunes on my desktop will not sync with iPod. It will only allow me to backup purchased tunes only, and then only via the apple store. How on earth can I back up my thousands of songs now? Any help greatly appreciated.

If you have a PC look for a free program called Sharepod. It lets you pull all your music off the device and store it on you computer, so you can then put it back into an iTunes library and sync it to your device.

Roof monkey thanks very much. I'll try that. I'm scared of downloading free software in case of malware or even worse being installed too.

    Update
Was able to get the back up to complete and, install the new 4.0 software.
This is what I did at the suggestion of an Apple tech guy.
On the left side of the iTunes page, I right clicked on the device name under "Devices", then picked "back up", (not, restore from back up) from the pop up window.
I let it do that back up and once it was finished, I went back and tried installing the new software and , it did.

    Hope this helps.
