Hey there folks...i got a 3Gs with the new iBoot, tether-jailbroke with Blackrain RC3 the other night and successfully installed Cydia along with 3G Unrestrictor, SBSettings and Backgrounder. I then installed Winterboard but when rebooting, I got to the usb/iTunes screen, hit make it rain to boot, geohot's pic came up but it never went to the springboard like its supposed to...the screen just ended up going black and when i hit the home button the usb/itunes display would come up again.

Now I'm not sure if I did something wrong that wouldn't let it boot up, I think i had iTunes open...or if there's a problem with Winterboard and tethered-jailbreaking with the new iboot for 3GS phones...but I restored back to factory settings and re-jailbroke again but I'm afraid to try to install Winterboard.

Anyone else using the tethered jaibreak method on your new iBoot 3GS...were you able to successfully reboot after installing Winterboard or did any of you have reboot problems also? I know one guy that had no problem with Winterboard...so I don't know if its a phone by phone thing or what.

And with Winterboard installed...can it cause problems to start with? Crashes? Instability?

I just got a replacement phone that has the new boot. I am staying away from winterboard for this reason.

Yes, winterboard plays havok with your mobile substrate.

Well I just took a chance and installed it. When it said "reboot phone" I hit the home button to get back to the springboard then manually powered down, rebooted, hit "make it rain" and held my breath....and it booted to springboard...whew. I'm only installing Glasklart and that's all.

I don't know why people keep b**tching about Winterboard so much. If you use it correctly, it does not cause problems. If you're having problems, it's most likely caused by some other application utilizing MobileSubtrate that isn't playing well with Winterboard.

I've never had major Winterboard problems on my 3G and it's been flawless on my 3GS.

If you're tethered, yeah it causes a reboot but so do other applications (SBSettings comes to the top of my head). It's fine.

    My $0.02.

So should I install it? Psylichon says hell no. It's the major cause of problems.

I'm saying, when you whittle your jailbreak apps down to sbsettings, backgrounder, and Winterboard, and you're still getting safe mode a lot, chances are Winterboard is your problem. Some themes are more problematic than others. YMMV and what not.

But assuming that Winterboard should be stable for all users because your setup works is a bit short-sighted I think. There are just so many variables involved with using that application.

Not sure if you're talking to me Kaba cuz I never *****ed about WB, I was just wondering if it could cause a problem with a tether jailbreak, that's all. And I know you have to reboot and other apps make you reboot.

But one app did indeed cause my springboard to crash a bunch of times...a javascript thing when I tried doing some mod to the lockscreen.

I think it was my fault cuz i had iTunes open or something after i rebooted with the WB install...but it worked out for me just fine this time and I love it :) I got crashes on my other 3GS when I had a million things installed after going crazy after a jailbreak...just gonna be a lil more careful now.

I wasn't referring to anyone specific but I hate when people flat out tell everyone not to install Winterboard. It all depends on your setup (you've got to know how you're using it and what you're doing) but to give a canned response is not best, IMO.

But what does "correctly" mean? Look, I have nothing against Winterboard or people using it. But if someone comes here looking for stability, I'm going to tell them to eliminate WB from the mix right off the bat because it is still one of the mostly likely JB apps to go south on you.

Correctly, as in, know your configuration. It all depends what you have installed. Just like oil and water don't mix, some applications that utilize MobileSubstrate don't mix well with each other. Hence, you have problems.

If people are having problems with Winterboard, do:

    1. Open SBSettings
    2. Tap "More"
    3. Mobile Substrate Addons
    4. Uncheck everything except Winterboard
    5. Start enabling one-by-one to see which is conflicting

I literally have 22 things in the Mobile Substrate Addons and I've had absolutely zero problems with Winterboard conflicts. I don't know what people are running here...

I'll see how my JB goes with only the few things I've installed.

I just did a web search and it brought me to this thread. HA... Anyway... here's what I was doing this afternoon. I installed 4.0 on my 3G and I used redsnow to JB. I enabled multitasking but I did not use pkgbackup to restore because I had 145 packages and I did not want to install them all since I am sure there will be issues with 4.0. As soon as I installed WINTERBOARD, I ran into issues. Nothing really bad except that anytime I would do a re-spring I would get some type of message and it would have something to do with winterboard. Anyway, I still think it is relatively stable if you know which combinations of mods work nice together. For the time being I installed PDANet as that is important for me to have working. So far I really like 4.0 and it seems FAST and very, very stable. If anyone has any questions, please ask away.
