yeah, if you missed the "merge info" prompt the first time, it won't come up again. i think the only way to get it back is to resync with your old computer (which would not be good to do if all your data was lost on it), and then sync with your new mac again.

If you can see all your apps, but they're not loading on to your phone, it probably means you're not logged into your itunes account in itunes. to make sure, go to Store->Sign In.

The answer may be in one of the previous 9 pages and I've looked at many, but I'm not sure.

My PC is running Vista. Windows would not start so I had to reinstall to the "out of the box" condition. That meant no iTunes. I managed to copy most of my files but not my old iTunes library cause I figured if they were on my iPhone (1st gen, 8gb,) I'd be OK. Go ahead and laugh.

Installed iTunes (9.2.15) and Outlook contacts sync OK but now of course my phone songs will be wiped out. How can I get my songs from my iPhone into iTunes?

hi, after installing iTunes on your computer, you'll be required to enter your details, including a credit card number and password. Click on iTunes store on the left-hand side - the store appears and there is a "search store" window in the top-right corner for you to enter a search term - either an exact name for what you are looking for or a general word to describe the type of thing you want. A list of apps will appear, either freebies or with a price next to them. Click on free or the price and it should start downloading to the folder you have stipulated. Hope that does it, good luck

Great thread. I am about to follow the procedure for moving my iTunes library from my XP machine to my new MBP. I read through the whole thread but I'm unsure about one thing. A while back I moved all my iTunes media to an external drive but the .lib, .xml, and some other genius database file (can't remember the name right now) still reside in the music folder on my C: drive. Can someone please post a screenshot of what the iTunes folder in OSX is supposed to look like so I can make sure everything is copied in the right place? Thanks!

Thanks, but I think I found it.

Update: That worked but I had to reinstall iTunes on my brand new Mac so it would read my Library.itl file. This baby copied 55 GB from my external drive in just under half an hour. Would have taken my old PC a week. Thanks again for the sticky!

A buddy of mine is having a really peculiar occurrence of this very issue. I lent him my first-gen iPhone to try out (and to activate an unlimited data plan on AT&T), and to perform that activation, we used the MacBook at work. He took it home to back up and sync with his PC, but he didn't erase. He quickly upgraded to an iPhone 4, selected to use the backup of that iPhone to initialize his iPhone 4, brought it back to me for jailbreaking on the MacBook, and now his computer wants to erase the iPhone again. Did hooking it up to the MacBook for the jailbreak cause the phone to get attached to the MacBook again? How can he get it re-attached to his PC? (will he just have to bite the bullet, back everything up, and see what happens when he hits the sync button?)

thanks for the awesome info! very helpful!

One source of frustration ... I copied my "iTunes Music" folder from my iTunes 10.1.0.54 installation on my existing Vista laptop and restored it into the c:/users/[username]/My Music/iTunes directory of my new Win 7 laptop. The result is a My Music/iTunes directory that contains an empty "iTunes Media" directory and the "iTunes Music" directory I restored from my old laptop. When I start up iTunes on my new machine, the library is blank. I tried to move the contents of the "iTunes Music" directory into the "iTunes Media" directory but that didn't work either (ie. blank iTunes library). Is there something I need to correct so that I can get all my music, podcasts, etc from my existing laptop's iTunes to my new Win 7 laptop?

    Thanks much!

You need to copy more than just the "iTunes\iTunes Music" folder. You have to copy the iTunes Library files as well (anything in iTunes\ ending in .xml or .itdb). Then the next time you start up iTunes it will notice that it's in iTunes Music and offer to upgrade it to the iTunes Media folder format. I don't think it matters much.

Does it work any differently if you have an iPod Touch instead of an iPhone? I recently got a laptop with Windows 7 (old one had XP). I was able to transfer the music files without problem, and the library/ xml files also copied, but when I set up iTunes, none of the playlists or playcount data copied over. I found this link and tried to duplicate the steps-- but when I get to the final step (syncing), I get a different message. Instead of asking about merging info, it simply asks if I want to erase the iPod and sync with the library on the new computer.

I've checked, and the library / xml files are in the Libraries/Music/iTunes folder on the new computer.

Is there anything else I should be doing? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your quick and very good reply.I cannot back up my files to disc as my DVD rewriter is Kaput, but your tip to consolidate all my files was very timely.I didn't realise how much music wasn't already in my library.thanks once again.

that doesn't sound normal. at least not for the mac version.

have you tried File->Library->Organize Library->Consolidate Files?
