    Hi acosmichippo,

Thanks for your great information. I have a question. In my case, I am gong to move from Windows 7 to Mac OS. Do I still follow your steps? I found out that currently in my Mac, I don't see the "MobileSync" folder, is it because I haven't started sync up yet?

What would be the proper procedure?
    Should I do:
    1. Copy the whole iTune library folder from Windows 7 to Mac ? In Mac, I see Music\iTunes\iTunes Media, but in Windows 7, it's Music\iTunes\iTunes Music. After I copy everything (including *.itdb and *.xml), I just rename the iTunes Music to iTunes Media?

    2. Are the apps included in the iTunes library folder?

    3. After I copy over, do I just plug in my iphone to my Mac and start sync? How's about the MobileSync/Backup in Windows? Since there is no such folder in Mac yet, will I lose my contacts?

    Thanks for your help

Hi, The message I get is "this will only restore the Contacts, calendars Text messages and settings not the iPhone firmware. I'm not getting the Merge info dialog box. What have I done wrong. Where are you supposed to place the backed-files? I have left them where they were. Sorry to bother you as every one else seems to have managed fine.

sorry about the late reply. kinda lost track of this thread. But yes, these same steps should apply for migrating from windows to mac.

    1) yes, that ought to do it

    2) yes they are.

    3) If you just manually create that folder, and put your mobile backup there, you should be good to go.

    Hi acosmichippo,

Thanks for the guide, however I have found it a tad late.
I switched computers two months ago as the old one died. I did do a backup but I cannot find the backup file I need on my external media.
Since the switch I have restored my phone and synced it quite a few times but I have never been able to sync music or videos. I assumed this was because I had a jailbroken phone so instead I used a third party program that let me drag and drop music. However, I decided to upgrade to the new iOS 4 yesterday and so restored the phone but due to the new firmware, obviously none of the third party programs support the new firmware, and thus do not let me sync music which gets me back to the same problem I had two months ago.
My question is where can I find this backup file?
Where do I put it in my itunes folder?
Why is itunes such a b*tch to use? -----> you don't need to answer that :)

    Thanks,

    Mark78

First i would make sure this is checked:

If you want to restore from an iphone backup (which i would not recommend doing if the iphone was jailbroken at the time), look for the files here:

    • OSX: Macintosh HD/Users/UserName/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
    • XP: C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    • Vista/Win7: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\AppleComputer\MobileSync\Backup

Note to windows users: The "Application Data" and "AppData" folders are both hidden from the user by default. To make them visible follow the directions here.

I have seen the answer to this question posted but have searched and cannot find it. I want to stop the photo app from automatically loading every time I connect my wife's 3gs to her mac and my iPad to my pc. I know it's simple because I did with my 3g but cannot recall how to do it. I posted here since I thought it may be a good topic to have saved in this thread. If it should be posted else where mods please move it. Thank you.

When the phone is connected to iTunes, you must click the phone icon in the list on the left. When you click the icon, you can select which items to sync. On the other hand, if you mean your photo application starts when the phone is connected, then you need to set the option for that app to NOT start every time a "camera" is connected.

    YMMV

'if you mean your photo application starts when the phone is connected, then you need to set the option for that app to NOT start every time a "camera" is connected.'

This is exactly what I mean and I cannot recall how to 'set the option for that app to NOT start every time a "camera" is connected.' It's controlled on the mac or pc is it not? How do you get to the option on the mac and pc to not start?

    Thanks

I found it on the pc in the control panel but am not familiar with macs.

    acosmichippo:

I currently run iTunes on Windows XP, and just recently, I updated my iTunes to 9.1 (I'll update it to 9.2 later) from iTunes 8. And all of a sudden, all 950 of my songs and all of my applications have been wiped out ever since I did the update. I have everything still stored on my iPhone (1st Gen.), and have been trying to do the syncing via my USB hub on my computer. Two weeks later: Still No luck. What do I do?

P.S. I used to have everything stored on my MacBook Pro, but it got lost. :( Will this have an affect on how I will be able to get everything back to normal?

    Yes, I'm lazy. Sorry.

Since that's established, let's get right to the point.

I've got a quick question and the bottom line is that I was too lazy to look through every post to determine the answer.

    Hypothetically
, if my phone were jailbroken and I had installed several things using Cydia and xxxxxxxxxx, would those things be removed when syncing with a new itunes library? I deleted my old one in an attempt to get itunes running again. (It worked in the long run.)
I'm not too concerned about the music and the stock apps, because I hardly use any of them.

Also, would it delete information from my phone such as phone book contacts or voice memos? I have some random data stored on /var as well.

I guess the shorter question would be...

What am I going to lose when I do this?
And vaguely, what will I not lose?

And if I'm going to lose too much, since the only thing I'm trying to actually do is put more music on my phone, is there a better way to get music on the phone and have it appear under ipod app as normal, album art included, without having to jump through Apple's little hoops of BS?

    no merge screen

Is there a way to sync your contacts if the merge screen does not show up?

You can back your contacts up in an email account.
iTunes > Info tab > Sync Address Book Contacts > Sync Yahoo/Google-Gmail.

    Still Stuck

    Hi
Not sure how to resolve this: I first synced my iphone resulting in a very successful loss of all my info while moving from XP to iMac (rocket scientist I know).

Then searched the web and found this post. Moved all my old backup files as you directed from XP to Mac. Now when I synced the phone again:

    1. I got no "merge profiles" instruction tab??? (I got it the with the first sync but not with the second!)
    2. I can see all my apps (which aren't appearing in the app store) but they dont load onto the iPhone.

    Any suggestion?
