    Pretty easy problem.

I have made no changes, installed nothing new, etc.

Tonight when I attempted to sync my iphone, itunes stalls at the Syncing John's iPhone screen and thats it. After 2 hours there is no change and nothing gets synced. The message, "Sync on Progress" remains on the iphone during this time as well.

What could have possibly happened that has caused this and what I can do to fix this? I have rebooted the PC and the iphone to no avail.

Wondering if it is an issue with iTunes?

Could be. First try a different cable in a different USB port.
Second, try launching iTunes after the phone is connected.
third, go through all the options of what to sync, and make sure that it's got everything you need checked
Then click apply and it should start syncing.
If there is a major change to the amount of Music or Video, I can tell you it can take a while to put on the iPhone.
If it's still having problems, locate the install that you used to install iTunes and uninstall and reinstall iTunes and try again.

btw - when it says sync in progress on the iPhone, what does it say in iTunes? There should be a progress bar at the top of what it's doing.

As you have stolen my name, sir, I will not be offering any assistance.

Kidding. There are a number of thigs you can try:

    1) Switch USB ports
    2) Make sure there isn't anything (lint) in the USB port on the computer or iPhone
    3) Restart iTunes
    4) Restart iPhone
    5) Restart computer
    6) Re-Install iTunes
    7) Click 'Sync' in iTunes
    8) Try a different cable

    Hopefully one will work.

So the mystery just gets deeper and deeper. If I wait long enough (2 hours) the phone will eventually sync. I had NO changes from the PC to the phone and it took 2 hours last night.

The itunes screen simply displays "Syncing John's iPhone..." and the iphone displays "Sync in Progress". Nothing else happens. Eventually, hours later, it will change and show the different things it's doing ie. the calendar, contacts, etc.

There has be no changes to anything on the iphone or PC.

When I eventually wait be bothered to wait the 2 hours, itunes and the phone get stuck on "cancelling sync".

I'm having the same problem as everyone else.

I uninstalled iTunes, downloaded and reinstalled a fresh copy. I also switched USB ports and shut down and restarted my iPhone.

I don't think the problem is on our end.

As of today mine has started taking about 5 minutes to Sync - used to be about 20 seconds.

Do you think Apple is busy messing with something? Ooh! spiracy. Maybe they're scanning phones before the update next week.

I have the solution. Disconnect from the internet (most likely turn off your airport) and restart itunes. When I shut my airport off, itunes syncs my iphone fine.

I don't have a fix for this, but this is the root of the problem.

They're scanning to see how many iphones are running at&t sim cards. They want to make sure they're getting their fair share from Ma Bell. :D

You're not wrong - no WiFi and my phone sync's in 15-20 seconds.

This is definitely a new thing. I'll rig up the WiFi this side of a simple hub and see what's going backwards and forwards.

I remember way last July when I synced with iTunes they asked for permission to have iTunes send apple data about the iPhone in order to help apple solve future problems.

Could this be something to do with it. If so where can you dis-able it in iTunes?

Has everyone's Sync's got faster again. Mine has.

I've just Sync'd my iPhone and it didn't do anything unusual. Just a bunch of the usual Apple mDNS multicast ping-of-death announcements. No phoning home.

For those that are still having problems, I know what's happening.

At the beginning of each sync, something on your computer called 'MD Crash Report Too' scans your iPhone for crash logs. If it finds any, it sends those logs to one of Apple's servers. MD only scans for crash reports, not jailbreaking, etc. I've checked.

Anyway, those servers have been down occasionally and were down for a few hours yesterday and today. Hence, MD was trying to contact those servers, but could not, so the sync sat there.

To stop it, all you have to do is kill MD. I'm not sure of how to do it on the PC, but on the Mac, go into Activity Monitor, find 'MD Crash Report Too' and press 'Stop Process'.

Syncs should be speeding up now; the servers are back online.
