Take a can of compressed air with that long thin red tube and stick it in the headphone jack and shoot a couple of spirts. But be careful not to turn the can upside down because you don't want that white liquid shooting into the phone. Hold it upright, take a couple of shots into the air first, then put it in your headphone jack.

It happened to me and after trying put in my headphones, then taking them out, it still didn't work. I went to the apple store and they did this to my phone.

They said that sometimes dust particules fall into the jack. When you put in your headphones, it lodges the dust into the jack making the phone think that headphones are still in place when there not. Good luck.

Apple needs to do something about this... These "fixes" are certainly convenient for many. This happened to me, and what I did was shut down my phone, inserted & removed my headset 3 times, re-started & it worked. But if this were to happen to me when I was out on the town, I wouldn't have headphones w/ me to use this fix....

I have recently ran into the same problem and I have tried everything to my knowledge to fix the problem. I have reset, rebooted, power off, insert headphone jack many times, and wasted 6 dollars on a can of dust remover. None of these solutions have worked. If there is any way I can fix this problem let me know before I decide to hassle with sending my phone in for repairs.

    Stuck in heaphone mode .....

I tried plugging in an old set of ear phones that has the plastic missing at the near end of the metal jack shank, (don't ask me why its missing). It cleared the problem immediately.

The reason I tried this is that when I got my iphone I tried this pair of ordinary earphones not realizing they would not work because the jack socket is so recessed. I found that because the normally plastic-covered metal part in the body of the jack was exposed it caused tracks I was playing to jump form the pause to start. it seemed a long shot but I guess it causes a very monir kind of short circuit - scary thought I know but I already knew it had not damaged my iphone.

Anyway, for what its worth, I cleared the problem that way.

OK, so here's my story...and possibly a solution. Was having the same problem as original poster. My iPhone would get stuck in Ringer (headphone) mode. No amount of inserting and removing the headphone jack would work. Blowing into the jack hole didn't work. Switching between Ipod and YouTube modes didn't work either. This morning I went to the Apple Genius Bar. They did some tests, blew crap out of the hole and the problem did not go away. Eventually they completely wiped my phone back to its virgin state. Still didn't do the trick. They offered to exchange the phone (of course, it's about a month out of warranty) with an exact copy (white, 3G, 16GB) for $199. I declined as I'm eligible for a lower cost 3GS upgrade in December. Came home depressed wondering why I didn't take out an AppleCare Plan. Again tried all the tricks and the problem just seemed to get worse (i.e. it just stayed in headphone mode). So, here's what worked for me. I normally use a pair of Etymotic earbuds that fit inside my ears (for exercise). The jack (that thing that goes inside the iPhone) is different from the earbud jack that came with the iPhone. The Etymotics jack has two black bands (separating the jack into three separate metal pieces). The native iPhone earbuds jack has three white band that separate the jack into four separate metal pieces. Somehow, my Etymotic jack messed up the iPhone settings and caused it to get stuck in the headphone mode. The only way to get it back was to re-insert the Etymotic jack. That has reset the iPhone and everything is working fine again. So, if you are using any brand of earbud other than the native iPhone buds, that may be causing the problem. Hope that helps. Works like a charm for me (I'm listening to songs over my speaker using iPod mode as I type this...sweet).

Iphone 3G stuck on headphone mode? After plugging/unplugging the headset in and out rapidly for about 30+ times and still showing "ringer(headphones)" or "headphone" when pressing the volume control, I had to try another way to try to release the microswitch. So I went to the bathroom and got a Q-Tip Cotton Swap. First cut off the cotton tip. Then using the stick without the cotton tip, gently massage the hole as if it is your ear hole. Eventually you will release the microswitch. Test the audio by sliding to unlock the iphone and observe the audio sound. It worked for me!

    lol

    everyone here is hilarious.
no one tried LOOKING in there with a flashlight?! really? everyone?
massage the headphone jack with a Q-Tip?!?!
a part of me wants you to keep the dust there so i can keep reading pure comedy...

i had to register to this webpage to report that i just removed a massive dust bunny from my headphone jack with a sewing needle.
FIRST look in there with a flashlight to visualize what you're doing! then put in the needle and press it against one side (pinching the dust) then slide the needle out along the wall.

After reading all this, I tried a composite of blowing really hard in the headphone jack hole (didn't have compressed air handy) and taking an unbent paper clip (yeah, I know, probably not a good thing) to "scrape" out the hole. Apparently this trips the microswitch or something and now, voila, I have sound again. Thanks to all of you in one way or another you helped.
