I thought I'd start a thread with some of the more common paths and mods as the currently stickied thread is a bit outdated. If I've screwed anything up or you know of a better way to do something I've listed, please PM me so I can make corrections, that way we won't have conflicting information in replies. I'm just scratching the surface here, so feel free to reply with additions!

    SMS Sounds Mod

    Location:
    /System/Library/Audio/UISounds/

iTunes can convert your audio file, be it mp3, wav, etc. to .aiff.
    Open iTunes
Pull down the edit list from the top
Select preferences > advanced > importing
    Select “import using aiff”
Then right click on the audio file and select open with iTunes.
Once the file is in iTunes (or if it already was) just right click on it and select convert to .aiff
Now delete that converted file to the recycling bin
Drag it back out of the recycling bin and onto your desktop
rename the file extension from .aif to .caf

Then you'll need a SSH client to transfer the file to the proper directory. That is here: /System/Library/Audio/UISounds/

The 6 Apple-created SMS sounds are as follows:
    sms-received1.caf = Tri-tone
    sms-received2.caf = Chime
    sms-received3.caf = Glass
    sms-received4.caf = Horn
    sms-received5.caf = Bell
    sms-received6.caf = Electronic

For this to work the name must be the same as one of the files above. So you'll want to pick one of these to replace. For example, if you decide to replace Electronic (which you should, cause it sucks) you'll want to rename your converted .caf file to: sms-received6.caf.

Then, using your ssh client, drag your .caf file into /System/Library/Audio/UISounds/ (you’ll want to overwrite the tone you’re choosing to replace). That’s it!

Please note that the SMS name will not change. So if you replaced Electronic with your own custom tone, it will still say "Electronic" in the menu, but will play your custom tone. You'll need to reboot the phone for the change to take place.

    Summerboard Themes
    Location:
    /var/mobile/library/summerboard/themes
To modify a theme with your custom icons, wallpapers, docks, etc., double click on the theme directory in the path above and you’ll see the various files. To replace the dock simply drag in the new dock image (overwriting the old). Your new dock image must be named exactly as the original is in the theme directory i.e., Dock.png.
Icons and wallpapers follow the same naming convention in their respective folders.

    vWallpaper mp4(s)

    Location:
    /private/var/mobile/media/skrew/videos/
Drop mp4(s) into the videos directory in the path above.

Good idea. We had a very similar thread started by a member that left, but it's long gone one. My vote goes for sticky.

    Great thread.

Out of curiosity, I was checking a theming tutorial over at Hackintosh.com. The tutorial was directed at firmware version 1.1.3. With each firmware update, are we seeing changes in path names? In other words, will the information provided above not be valid for 2.0?

    Good question, Eragon.

I can say for certain that none of the paths changed when I updated from firmware 1.1.2 to 1.1.4. It seems unlikely that they would redesign the wheel with 2.0, but certainly anything is possible. Just seems like that would be a lot of unnecessary rework of some pretty solid file structures. That's not to say that some individual items might get a new home (or path) with the addition of new bells and whistles. Can't wait to find out!

Paths are the same in 1.0 - 1.1.2. They are also the same in 1.1.3 and 1.1.4. This is because 1.1.3 changed the default user from root to mobile. So if a file was located in /var/root/Library in 1.1.2, it would be located in /var/mobile/Library in 1.1.3.

    I stand corrected. Thanks, John.

Again, if anyone finds the paths listed above to be incorrect, let me know so I can fix them.

Hey Freaky, great write-up. Just noticed a few small errors.
Input Field (Bubble where you type you're text message)
    /Applications/MobileSMS.app/BalloonInputField.png
Baloon 1 (Bubble where sent text messages are)
    /Applications/Calculator.app/Baloon_1.png
Baloon 2 (Bubble where recieved text messages are)
    /Applications/Calculator.app/Baloon_2.png
Bottom Bar Background (Background behing the text input field)
    /Applications/MobileSMS.app/MessageEntryBG.png

Should the app be MobileSMS.app for all 4? It's a small thing but it'd be kind of funny for someone to try and put a chat bubble into their calculator.

I am trying to update my carrier logo and I am not seeing them in this directory. I agree they were there prior to 1.1.4. Can someone let me know where they are now?

    thanks

The best solution is to sync and then back up with your old PC.

Then transfer across the entire Apple Computer folder (/Documents and Settings/Application Data/Apple Computer) to the new PC.

Make sure the iTunes version is the same on both PCs before you begin.

iTunes will then work just as it did before and not even know that you're on a different PC.

All of your data and apps will be just as you had them before.

i guess i partially already screwed up. my phone WAS working fine, and synced to the new PC. yesterday my iphone totally crashed, went from working to the "sync with itunes" screen. i was in such a panic to restore my iphone, i restored through itunes and figured i migth as well update to 2.2.1 (i was on 2.1). so now i have almsot everything back onto my iphone (had to recreate playlists, import contacts and calendar, etc. the only thing i can see missing is the notes. is there any way to retrieve it from the old pc without having to reinstall the old software onto the iphone , then resore on old pc, the upgrading, then jailbreaking/reinstalling everything AGAIN??? Thanks!

Ok, so does anyone know the directory path where the iPhone stores the sync'd photos that are NOT in the Camera Roll.

Reason I ask is I've recently started using Cydia's File2Mail, so now I can email multiple docs in the same email. Yesterday I attached & successfully sent a Word & Excel file in the same email. I had these files already stored in my TextGuru folder and found the directory path through MobileFinder, so I now know where to point File2Mail in the future to attach TextGuru notes and other MS Office files stored.

Unfortunately, I can only find Camera Roll photos at /var/mobile/media/DCIM/etc., but I have hundreds of other photos sync'd which I'd like to send more than one per email whenever I need to.

Anyone found this directory path to non-Camera Roll photos??
