Lost contacts upgrading to iOS5

    I upgraded to iOS5 and synced with iTunes after backing up. However, when I went into contacts on my iPhone and address book on my computer, 95% of my contacts were missing. I tried restoring/downgrading to an earlier restore but I know its normal that it doesn't want me to. Is there a work around into downgrading to 4.x.x?
