I have 3000+ contacts in Outlook and I am trying to get them into new 16GB iphone and from there into new MACBOOK pro. It has been syncing via itunes for 90 mins already and doesn't show progress anywhere - surely that's not normal? can anyone help?

There is a chance there is a pop up window behind the iTunes window telling you that "X" percentage of contacts have changed and asking you to hit "ok".

IT WORKED! I disabled the 3rd party add-ins other than itunes...
For Outlook 2007, follow these steps to disable third-party add-ins:

    1. Open Outlook 2007
    2. From the Tools menu, choose Trust Center.
    3. Select Add-ins from the left column.
    4. Look at the list of add-ins beneath "Active Application Add-Ins" and determine if anything is listed other than the "iTunes Outlook add-in." If so, continue on to disable those add-ins.
    5. In the Manage box, click COM Add-Ins, and then click Go.
    6. In the COM Add-Ins dialog, deselect the checkbox for each third-party add-in in this list.
    7. Click OK.
