I tried to upgrade the iOS from 4.1 to 4.2.1 and failed. Now I can't even turn the phone on or whatsoever. Can't restore the phone neither using redsn0w or other software.
    Please help!!

Error 28 indicates a Hardware error. Have you tried using a different USB? Are you running with the latest version of iTunes?

Try rebooting the computer and using a new USB cable and a different USB port.

ok, so far I am still on DFU loop, can't turn the phone on or see any iTunes or apple logo on it.
Today I tried to restore it on another mac, but keep having the same errors like 1600. Tried to restore using official firmware also, but then got error 28.
    any ideas anybody?

As I mentioned earlier on, Error 28 I a possible hardware error. I would personally suggest taking it into Apple for replacement.

I am on Mac and as far as I know iReb is for Windows. Going to try on Windows tomorrow if I'll find anybody who uses it.

The Mac version has been 'almost finished' since I can remember. Try a Windows machine.

If you can get past the error 28 and get to error 1600, I doubt it's hardware related. iREB doesn't work on the 3GS. Have you tried deleting the offical ipsw and downloading it again?

You mentioned the firmware is 'custom' ?
Could be the issue right there.

OK now. I fixed the problem by draining out the battery, don't get error 28 anymore. Now can't restore to custom either official firmware. Getting errors 16xx or something like 31xx. Tried on mac and windows using iReb. Didn't fix the problem.
