Hey guys, So I got another iPhone 4 for Christmas (I've had one since launch date, remember i posted about it catching on fire? Anyway) I had the 16gb iPhone 4 with an OEM White backplate I ordered for $80 online. So, my new iPhone 4 is 32gb which is much needed over my 16gb so I gave my mom my 16gb one as I no longer need it. I went to install my white backplate on this new one first though, and realized the two screws along the bottom Are now * shaped (5 prong star the size of the asteric I just typed is on the screen) whereas my original iPhone 4 were + also about that size which I could remove with a uber tiny flathead. I can't get these screws out with that tool to change the backplate So I have two questions, 1:does anyone else notice that their screws are like this? With the * shape? My first iPhone 4, brothers, and all my friends' have the + shape. 2: anyone know where I can get a tool to take these screws so I can use my $80 white backplate? Thanks in advance!!!
Mine are regular screws. Maybe Apple changed screws later on in the manufacturing process or something. I've had mine since the release date.
Any hardware or computer store should have a set of tiny screwdrivers in different shapes. I don't think it's really a big deal, Apple or one of the manufacturers probably went with a cheaper screw. The more rays on the star robs you of metal, just like Kit Kat robs you of chocolate. It's quite ingenious if you think about it.
Same * screws for me. And I just got mine last week after 2 refurbs that were defective. Couldn't tell u what they looked like on my first one I got on launch day Sent from my iPhone using iCafe
Sounds like you have torx screw heads in that one. Did a quick google and found: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.html/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/183-2589134-6179161?a=B000F9CS1U You can also find these at most home repair / DIY stores... Home depot, lowes, etc... Sent from my iPhone using iCafe app
Mine are * shaped and that is a torx tool that you will need not sure of the size but you can get that tool at pretty much any hardware store.
It is a 5 point star in there which is not a torq screw. It is also smaller than sz #00 It is also than smaller than standard precision screws. It is a custom made screw by apple to prevent people modifying the phone. However, if you can get the screws out, they can be replaced with the x or Phillis or any other head. iFixit sells a tool that will get it out, and strip the screw though, but they are forever out of stock. There are specialty stores that sell screwdrivers that will get it out and strip it and then you can replace the screws.
Proprietary BS. I feel for you. Like when I need to move some Macs and Mac monitors, only to find their power connector being square versus the PC standard, the semi house shape, what's out called.
Yeah I remember reading about that somewhere, custom screws made by apple to prevent modification and or tampering with the insides. I will have to look around. Worst case scenario u could always sell my white backplate n get some money back, I just really liked it.
It's not proprietary at all. Many micro hardware components use torx because there is very little pressure needed when installing the screw. This prevents accidental stripping or losing grip on the screw, which in the case of micro components is absolutely essential. People used to debate that it was to prevent consumers from taking devices apart themselves but torx wrenches are so easily available, I find that a poor argument You can pick up a micro torx set at walmart even. I just got the 16gb iPhone 4 from the apple store in the vintage faire mall and the screws on the bottom of mine are also *
Haha that's weird, that's the apple store I go to most often (Modestos Vintage Faire) I got this iPhone in Dallas when I was there this summer. So looks like they are switching the screws over everywhere or something? I don't know. Maybe there will be a tool later to use on these * screws. Maybe not, I'm not gonna worry about it, the new iPhone will be out in 5-6 months so whatever. I hope they're just not gonna release the White iPhone 4 in place of a brand new iPhone this summer. I will be very very upset haha
It is a 5 point star, (i think torq is six point) it is also smaller than precision screws. Have you done this or are you speculating, I looked all over the internet and tried all the precision screwdrivers and none worked. I know it is smaller than #00.
"Proprietary" is debatable as is security as evident by some manufacturers labeling their products as tamper proof torx. But regardless of that, the fact still remains that they are better for micro components from a production point of view. Torx is 6 point by definition but it is also sold in 5 point. Have you tried this one? iPhone 4 5-point Micro Torx
