    If you have a mac at home you can install the iPodage widget it does what you ask and more. I cut and paste the description from apple.com, as well as the link. It's pretty cool.

    About iPodage
    A simple widget that tells you how many songs really fit into your iPod or iPhone. You can choose the average song length and the size of your iPod’s heart and it will calculate the possible amount. That’s not enough though! iPodage displays the ‘real’ disk space, lets you select your iPod model and remembers everything!

    It does not hold X number of songs. It holds 8GB worth of songs.

    It does hold X amount of songs if based on certain criteria.

    say an 8GB iPhone can hold 350 Bohemian Rhapsody's

    or 25 American Pie's

    Refering to size in song terms is easier and less abstract for those who have trouble wrapping their heads around 8 GB.

    I use to refer to time in Flinstone's episodes when I was a kid.

    But technically you are correct an 8 GB iPhone holds 8 GB's of music......
