Does it bother anyone else to call the new iPhone "iPhone 5"

Actually your list for the generations is incorrect. Apple has always numbered the iPhone generations by CPU architecture.

Original iPhone: 1st Gen - Apple hardware ID for the SDK was iPhone 1,1.
iPhone 3G: 1st Gen - Apple hardware ID for the SDK was iPhone 1,2.
iPhone 3GS: 2nd Gen - Apple hardware ID for the SDK was iPhone 2,1.
iPhone 4: 3rd Gen - Apple hardware ID for the SDK was iPhone 3,1 (AT&T) and 3,3 (Verizon).
iPhone 4S: 4th Gen - Apple hardware ID for the SDK was iPhone 4,1 (World GSM & CDMA).

The iPhone and iPhone 3G used the same CPU the ARM 1176JZ. They switched to the ARM Cortex A8 for the iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 4 was built around the Apple A4. And finally the iPhone 4S was built around the Apple A5.

This is publicly verifiable thru at least a dozen sources. But the only one that matters is Apple themselves, since they are the ones that published the above data. So with that in mind...

Smart money is on the iPhone 5 (5th Gen - SDK ID iPhone 5,1) will be built on the Apple A5X with two of the GPU cores removed or turned off. Since they already have the power requirements nailed because of the iPad (3rd Gen).

Does it really matter? When someone looks at your new phone and asks if it's an iPhone, do you answer with a Yes, it's an iPhone (list generation # here)? Probably not.
You will say, yeah it's the new iPhone.

This makes sense, however using this method the iPhone 4 (3,1) should have been called iPhone 3.

iPhone 5 is what the tech sites are calling it, so be it. I just hope Apple doesn't name their 6th iPhone release, the "5". Regardless, I'll be buying it when it comes out. Smart money is on it just being called the new iPhone, following the recent iPad release...

Not bothered at all - discussing name-calling is the art of wasting the vast amount of free summer holiday time one has - not necessarily a bad activity though - more like a hobby or a vacation trip. I still have intensely complex and yet profoundly useless good memories from the now a-bit-outdated iPod Touch vs iTouch discussions.

    edit: :)

Actually, the list is pretty spot on.

The iPhone and iPad are the only two Apple devices that were structured under a numbering system in the last 5 years. Apple removed that from the iPad this year and I believe they will do so with iPhone this October. I actually found it humorous that Apple had 6 distinct product lines without a numbering system and no one complained but the second the iPad went to that naming convention and people freaked out.

I won't ever be asked that question. Consider it very rude to have a device out when I should be paying attention to the people around me instead. But then again I am old school and still read paper based litterateur, respond to my parent with ma'am and sir and open doors for everyone. So what do I know of this day and age? ;)

I personally don't think Apple will ever call it iPhone LTE....that just sounds wrong to me, and to be frank, a little to droidie if you get my drift.

No. I will find a way to own the newest version of the almighty iPhone, regardless of what name they give it or when the bleep they decide to release it. I have enough other things to be bothered about.

    what happens next?

    iphone 4
    iphone 4s
    'the new iphone'
    'the new iphone S'?

i hate the rebranding-- it's useless and doesn't seem smart in the long run. especially since the word 'new' is relative. blah

i dont even get why they called it 'the new ipad'-- looks like the same old ipad to me (i know there are some differences but not enough to warrent a different title in my opinion)

So you have issues with the 12 other Apple products that don't have numbers after them and never have?

The differences between the iPad 2 and the iPad (3rd Gen) are astounding. The fact that you think they aren't significant shows how little you know about the two products.

    1. they might not have numbers but they did have 'names' that were based on what the product did. if you go back to iPod's a while back, they named the iPod that had video, the iPod video. it later became known as the classic. they didn't change it a ton but still decided to change the name. i think the problem really lies in the fact that apple chose the numbering route.

    2. i guess i fall into the category of consumers who sees the iPad still as a larger iPhone. i do understand that the processors and iOs's have been updated but i would say that most of the updates were just due to the fact that the iPhone had came out with new tech., so they had to add it to the iPad (front facing camera, upgraded camera, etc). now when the ipad mini comes out, i feel like that is different enough to warrant a specific title. adding 'new' to a product only goes one generation deep in my opinion.

the iPad to me is analogous to what Nintendo did with the DS. there was the DS lite but then Nintendo came out with the DS: XL, which was just a larger screen. apple just hasn't won me over yet to justify having 2 'iPhones'

that's what I think they're headed. I tell everyone the same thing. But in all whatever they call it, it won't matter to me as long as its an improvement of the current iPhone and looks different. I will still buy it lol

How about "Cinco de iPhone?" That way if we don't like it, at least we can drink.

Don't really care, as long as they call it mine that's all that matters.

My guess is they'll go with "the new iPhone" and ditch the numbers altogether, just like they did for the iPad, and generally have done for iPod's. The numbers get "confusing" when they don't match up with the generation of the phone. But personally, I don't care when someone calls it the iPhone 5 because I know what they're talking about, whether or not that's what it's eventually named by Apple.

Didn't Apple catch flack globally for labelling LTE on the iPad when it was only US-LTE.

That might nix an iPhone LTE unless they want to run US and non-US naming. Not that that's an issue for me. I'm use to such conventions ;)
